[Serious] What technologies/concepts should a young web developer learn
My point here is, when a young developer is dipping their toe into the water, assuming they already have basic HTML on the radar, what one technology/concept should they learn/concentrate on next.
When voting, consider what will give them long term value...
- CSS
- PHP/ASP etc
- Databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
- Coding practices (Web standards, naming conventions, code indentation etc)
Feel free to suggest others, also explain your selection :)
Edit: I am looking for the single most effective technology/concept to learn.

Those should be checkboxes instead of radiobuttons so that all of them could be checked.

1) It looks like I don't have access to do so
2) My point was what one technology should be focused upon...
Thanks Hack :)
Re: [Serious] What technologies/concepts should a young web developer learn
You can't just pick one. It has to be all of them. I'm still going to vote to show that I am against the radio buttons.

Re: [Serious] What technologies/concepts should a young web developer learn
I agree that it should be all of them.
So I have voted for the Coding practices as mendhak voted for ASP/PHP and hack for databases.
Now if someone could vote for CSS.
Re: [Serious] What technologies/concepts should a young web developer learn
Yes i can only agree with previous comments, All of the Above !!!
CCS duly voted for !!!

Yeah it should be in checkboxes. Fail. ;p
Re: [Serious] What technologies/concepts should a young web developer learn
Now that the options are evenly matched, it would be symmetrical to move this to Gen Dev.

Re: [Serious] What technologies/concepts should a young web developer learn
ASP.NET, JavaScript, Flash and maybe learning how to really advance with a graphics editor like PhotoShop.
Re: [Serious] What technologies/concepts should a young web developer learn
I agree with above, however I believe that its best to specialise in one area. So sure learn php and asp.net however pick the one you like most and focus on that.

i must say, all of them are necessary now a days. Checkboxes would have been much better :)

HTML, CSS, Javascript, one server side scripting language (php, asp.net, python, ruby on rails, java) and sql are sine qua non. You need not be an expert in every technology mentioned above, but you should have some knowledge of these technologies.
I dare say too specific an answer is being asked for too generic a question. If you are focusing primarily on client side - flex, flash, action script, photo shop too will come into picture.
Other things that need attention will be sql injection and cross site scripting.
