Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Maybe this is not the best place to ask my question but anyway...
When I try to install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 I get an error but I can't see any messages.
I thought maybe I had to install .NET framework 3.5 SP1 separately so I tried that. However this gave me an error aswell:
Code:
WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (CBS) is not installed.
So I thought, easy to fix, just install .NET framework 2.0 SP1... However, it says I can't install this on Windows Vista because it is not supported...
Err..? What do I need to do?

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
im not sure, but I plan on installing it on Vista later on tonight, so I will post back and let you know. I am on an XP Box right now.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Quick question, do I have to install both the VS.2008 SP1 and the .Net 3.5 SP1? If so, in what order?
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
are you running Vista RTM or Vista SP1?

yes both, and they are both part of the same installer package. They go hand in hand.

Got me confused here...I'm downloading the VS.2008 SP1 iso file. Does that contain .Net 3.5 SP1?

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I had posted mine in the GD Forum since it applies to all .NET languages. :p :D
I went to lunch first so you beat me to it and I didnt see yours until right now
Maybe we should merge them but probably best in the GD forum IMO

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I think the VB.NET forum is the best place for it, considering most of our users here are in fact VB developers and this is the most popular forum for .NET related questions on this forum. Also since most people developing against .NET 2.0 and up mostly are using VS 2008 at this point.
I was only going to leave it as a sticky here for a few days, then let it sink to the bottom.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Yea, but there are also C# and ASP.NET traffic to consider too. ;)

I suppose this was to me?
I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit with Service Pack 1 installed.
I've been using VS2008 and .NET framework 3.5 for at least few months now already without any problems...
I tried installing VS2008 SP1 again after reading here that it includes .NET framework 3.5 SP1, and now I noticed there was an error log, which basically tells me it errors on installation of .NET framework 3.5 SP1 (same error message). So it's the .NET framework that is causing problems, not VS2008 SP1 itself.
I tried googling it, found a few forums but all of them just asking the question and no useful replies found yet...
EDIT
I found one post that said to use some Cleanup utility, which I just did (removed .NET framework completely as far as I can tell) and then install 2.0SP1 and 3.0SP1, then 3.5 and then 3.5SP1... 2.0SP1 and 3.0SP1 did not want to install on Vista so I just skipped those. I re-installed 3.5 and then tried 3.5SP1 again, same error...

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I installed the BETA release of SP1 but there doesnt seem to be any way of uninstalling the BETA without uninstalling the entire Visual Studio installation... (yes I ticked the "show updates" box in add/remove programs)
So I'm just gonna install the release version of SP1 as well and see how badly it screws up :)
Oh and by the way, the link you provided only works for Visual Studio, not the VB Express edition. This was the only link I could find for that: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...ng=en#filelist

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Just one reason why you should always consider the effects of installing Betas.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
meh, I was willing to give anything a try that claimed to enhance the terrible WPF designer...

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Works completely fine for me. Are you using fireFox?

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Yea, I found Microsoft's sites hate Firefox with a passion. The download sites don't download and MSDN causes Firefox 3 to actually crash when I do a search. Maybe it's just me and my installation, but of the hundreds of web sites I hit every day, I only have these problems on those two.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I have seen firefox crash at MSDN site too, but I wouldn't blame that on MSDN. Even if there was a problem with the site, the browser should be able to handle the problem without crashing.

There is also a preperation tool that will remove any beta updates or patches to VS 2008 RTM that you can run prior to installing SP1. However SP1 should tell you if it needs to run that before trying to install. It did for me.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I've never had any problems using Firefox with MSDN or Microsoft Download Center. If the download does not start automatically, you should be able to follow the "Start download" link.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I actually did some digging and found the reason all of these Firefox3 problems. It's Silverlight of all things. I tore Silverlight off my system and everything works perfectly now. I can download from Microsoft Download Center, MSDN doesn't crash, etc.
LOL, I guess I can blame Microsoft for my Firefox problems after all.
It could just be a bad install of Silverlight. I had Silverlight installed with Firefox2, then I installed Firefox3. I'll try reinstalling Silverlight after lunch and post the result for any Firefox users who are having trouble getting the service pack.
EDIT: Ok, my suspicion was confirmed. Re-installing Silverlight makes a happy Firefox3. I guess this is a problem where:
You have Firefox2.
You install Silverlight.
You upgrade to Firefox3.
Silverlight will FUBAR Firefox3 on Microsoft's sites (and perhaps anyone else using Silverlight).
To fix: Close all browsers. Uninstall Silverlight. Reinstall Silverlight.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I couldn't edit control templates in blend ( got a error) after installing .net 3.5 sp1 so I'm scared to install this

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
If you use the preperation tool you will also need the VS physical media but not sure about the Express versions.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
FYI: This update does not work with 2008 Express versions.

I did a search, and as of right now, the only thing available is 2008 express with SP1 Beta, or SP1 for 2005, but no SP1 release for 2008 express.

Do a better search: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
For reference there's a VS 2008 Team Foundation Server SP1 too: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

I searched the download center for VS SP1 updates, and that's what returned. Don't chide me for what MS returns.
Besides, I was looking for an UPDATE, not a full uninstall/reinstall---of which, there appears to be no other option right now, so the full/full option is the only way until I get around to purchasing a higher version.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Dont know if its just a coinsidence but after installing SP1 on my system, VS took ages to load and my entire system turned into a zombie for several minutes, even after it (VS) had started up completely :(
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
VS SP-1 takes preparation before installing especially if you had the beta version installed. Also, it can take hours to install depending upon your system resources.
-
Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Well, i installed it yesterday..But today was my first time loading VS since then. I hope it was a one time thing, hopefully next time it'll be as fast as it was 2 days ago (ooh the days  )
;)

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
I just installed it from the ISO. While everything went alright (I also had AVG report backdoor.win32.vb.ffx on setup.bin in the BootStrapper area) the bootstrapper for DotNetFX 3.5 SP1 is messed up. It has no files.
I extracted .NET 3.5 SP1 from the ISO, unpacked it and copied it into C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\Packages\DotNetFX35SP1
Most of my errors went away, but I'm getting warnings about two of the files Public Keys don't match. *** gives?! This is probably the sloppiest job I've ever seen done on a service pack.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
Well I never rush to install a SP or new version until I see how the community is experiencing it first :D

I usually install them right away at RTM, but only when I have had success with the betas previously.
However I tend to not install anything on my main production machine until I have done it on the other machines.

Re: [2008] Service Pack 1 released
