[RESOLVED] Laptop - No cttrl+Alt+Delete
Hi guys,
I have a laptop that somehow the keyboard combination ctrl+alt+del on the built-in keyboard doesn't work anymore. When I say it doesn't work, I mean not just in Windows but also in DOS (booting from a bootable floppy diskette). However, ctrl+alt+del will work on an external keyboard (PS/2 or USB). I already replaced the built-in keyboard with a new one (thinking the old keyboard is bad) but it didn't fix it.
Is there anything else I can check/test before comdemming it's the motherboard that need to be replaced?
PS: except for the ctr+alt+del combination, all other keys seem to work OK on the built-in keyboard.

Maybe one of the keys is broken on the laptop?

Click on the Letter C and then scroll down to Control Alt Delete and see if any of the listed suggestions help.

Yeah, I thought that too. That was why I replaced the keyboard, but the new keyboard didn't make any difference.

Thanks for the link, Hack. It contains lots of useful tips. However, I could not find anything that can apply to this particular case I'm having. The Ctrl+Alt+Del key combination doesn't work event when I boot into DOS using a floppy. You know, normally, when in DOS, at the A:> prompt, if we hit ctrl+alt+del it will restart the computer. However, it does nothing on this computer. If I keep on doing it many time or just holding the keys down, I start hearing beeps... That means that they keys actually do something, but I just don't get the desired response...
Re: Laptop - No cttrl+Alt+Delete
Then I think your orginial assumption is reasonably accurate. It would seem the keyboard, at least in this case, is not communicating with the motherboard.
Re: Laptop - No cttrl+Alt+Delete
there is an alternate keypress that does the same thing in windows. ctrl-shift-esc.

Yes, you're almost right, only if I can sign on to Windows. The signon screen where it says "Please press Control + Alt + Del to sign on to Windows" won't take ctrl+shift+esc as an alternative though.
I strongly believe something is wrong with the motherboard, so I will replace it. Will mark this thread as resolved. Thanks you everyone.
Re: [RESOLVED] Laptop - No cttrl+Alt+Delete
you can turn the control alt del requirement off. its in control panel -> users. "change the way users sign on and off". Hook up the external keyboard and get into windows and then remove the requirement.

This computer is part of a domain, I'm afraid that Windows will not let me change the way users sign on.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
