VB6 and security issues ??
I want to thank all of you that have read this, if any one has an answer I would be extremely grateful.
I have heard that there is a security issue with VB6 opening your system up to viri.
I came up with an idea to create a user id on my system to be used purely for VB6, I figured to install vb6 under that user id and only for that user. I also had planned to disconnect from my lan when using that account as an added measure.
My question is will this help keep my system less vulnerable to attacks? or am I waiting my time?
My system
Fujitsu Laptop
2.8 Ghz intel
win 2k pro
60 gig hd
1 gig mem
again thanks
Re: VB6 and security issues ??
Have you consulted with your network administrator before deciding to pursue anything?

If you use common sense and a antivisue program you will be safe. Dont open email attachments from unknown sources etc.

That comment seems vague and generalized (something a Linux user would say?). Anything could open your system up to dangers. What are the specifics of that though?
Re: VB6 and security issues ??
I want to thank all of you for the responses. :)
couple things: basically I am the network admin it's on my home lan.
I apologize for the vagueness of my original post, the issue was something that my wife had read about and she was unable to get me back to that article.
however as I have just reformatted and reinstalled windoze ( I went back to win2k, XP really does suck  ), it was only about 3 days after installing vb6 back on my system that i got hit with some weird virus that the only manifestation i could find was a requester box that was in (I am guessing here) Arabic, I am hoping that my problems are now null and void. But as we all know there are enough really talented hackers out there that spend every waking minute trying to figure out how to rain on Mr Gates parade.
anyway thanks again
may your code be :afrog: free and your logic impeccable.

Re: VB6 and security issues ??
So you are reacting to an unverifiable rumor? I would say that your wife misunderstood or misread a post that had to do with certain attachments to certain e-mails.
Also, the use of the term Windoze was popular among a small and remarkably ignorant subset of computer users, so use of the term may tend to tar you with a brush you don't deserve. On the other hand, while many people have retreated from Vista to XP, I have never before heard of anybody retreating from XP to Win2k. That's an interesting choice.
Re: VB6 and security issues ??
If Shaggy hadn't posted, I'd have had a 'reactive' response to that post for using the term "windoze". :afrog: However, on a level-headed note, it does seem like you may have issues with your own network's security. Just because VB6 was installed on a machine 3 days ago doesn't mean it's to blame. As harsh as it sounds to you, getting a virus or a trojan is your own fault. You should secure your network, get an antivirus program and check your surfing habits.
VB6 was an enterprise level rapid application development language. This language would not have lasted this long and be in so much use had it had such a flaw in it. Nobody deliberately releases a product that they want to make money off with deliberate flaws in it.
Re: VB6 and security issues ??
Oddly, when I tried googling on VB6 and security flaws, this particular thread was first on the list. Personally, I suspect that the issue was a misunderstanding involving a spate of malicious e-mails with attachments ending in .vb, but that's just a guess.
