Vpn

Hey,

I was given all the credentials for VPN access so I can connect to my client's computer and access some files.
I made a new connection through 'My Network Places' and when I double click on it and enter my credentials it says I am connected.
I have not worked with VPN before so I am fairly new.
It tells me that I am connected but I don't know how to access their computers.

Can someone lend a hand please?
Do I need a VPN software?

VPN is a interesting creature.
What you could try and do is ping their IP address, if you can ping it then you are good to go to access the file shares on their computer. Otherwise, well the VPN servers gonna need some tweaking.

No, you don't need a VPN software. Once you are connected as you have mentioned above then you can access the remote computer by two main ways

1) Double click the Net Places and select the pc/Shared Drive. The only hitch with this way is that you may take longer to access the relevant drive/pc.

2) Click on Start Menu=>Run and directly type the address of the drive you want to access and click ok. The address should be something like
\\sdsdasds\data$\myfolder. This is a much faster way...

This wont work if DNS isn't setup correctly over the VPN.
Or I have actually encountered this as a "bug" in Windows XP 64bit edition, where the VPN server was setup correctly but my machine refused to send a query to the remote DNS server. That's why I mentioned using IP address over hostname.

Yes, you are right but till the time vbgladiator confirms the same, I am assuming that the DNS is setup correctly.
