Re: am I reading it wrong?
Maybe its a type-o as it could be a "1"? If she was 11 then why didnt she know how to read/write/speak still?
Re: am I reading it wrong?
yeah they seem to be not so good with the proof reading over there.. or fact checking, but what news organization is?
Re: am I reading it wrong?

Re: am I reading it wrong?
HEllen KEller went deaf/blind at age 7, if I remember right.... Sullivan came to teach when Keller was 11.... someone at CNN didn't take a proper English class.
"Sullivan was hired in 1887 to teach Keller, who had been left blind and deaf after an illness, at the age of 11."
It's missing a comma.

Re: am I reading it wrong?
It's still a bit confusing. Dashes would remove that part more convincingly.
Quote:
Sullivan was hired in 1887 to teach Keller — who had been left blind and deaf after an illness — at the age of 11.
Although the birthdate wouldn't make sense then.
Re: am I reading it wrong?
Bah. They've fixed it now.
Quote:
Sullivan was hired in 1887 to teach Keller, who had been left blind and deaf after an illness at the age of 1½. With her new teacher, Keller learned language from words spelled manually into her hand. Not quite 7, the girl went from an angry, frustrated child without a way to communicate to an eager scholar.
Re: am I reading it wrong?
It's still not as clear as it could be, though. :D
"Not quite 7, the girl went from an angry, frustrated child with no way to communicate, to an eager scholar."
Re: am I reading it wrong?
The life of Helen Keller article:
"Helen Adams Keller was born on 27 June 1880."
"In February 1882, when Helen was nineteen months old, she fell ill."
"On 3 March 1887 Anne arrived at the house in Tuscumbia and for the first time met Helen Keller."
Re: am I reading it wrong?
I'm just holding all my Helen Keller jokes deep inside.. following this thread in anguish at the loss of opportunity...
