VB 2005 and later versions are now part of the .NET environment. VB6 and previous versions were abandoned quite a long time ago. Depending upon your level of experience, and if you plan on pursuing Visual Basic as a career, it would be worth your time to learn the .NET language(s).

VB6 was released back in 1998 and was last version of what many call Classic Visual Basic. Language is still widely used however MS had dropped main stream support for it because they've come up with what they call .Net technology.
Since year 2001 all releases of Visual Basic (2001, 2003, 2005 and brand new 2008) are part of .Net framework and have very little resemblance with original (or Classic if you will) Visual Basic - product name and syntax similarities - that's about it.
As said, if you plan to pursue programming then I'd also recommend to stick with VB.Net (VB 2005 or 2008). Btw, Express Editions are free and are downloadable directly from MS.
If you however just a hobbist programmer then VB6 may work for you well enough.
When I said "abandoned", I meant that Microsoft doesn't really support VB6 or previous versions anymore, hence you cannot buy it from them directly, and must resort to a third party. VB6 has NOT been abandoned by the consumer, only the creators.
I love vb 6, to create something out of nothing = godness!!!
