What should I take?

I am interested in becoming a programmer when I get older, and I am wondering what to take in college. I want to work with things such as JAVA, VB, C++, etc. I planned on going to a 4 year university, and studying computer science, however, I just saw that community colleges have a general computer programming program. Computer science also deals with the science involved with programming as well as the logic while the computer programming is just the programming..Do you think I should go ahead and do the Computer Science? Will that look better when it is time to find a job? Also, the Computer Science program I want to do says on the web site that it has a lot of jobs ready for graduates/students.

You don't have to study computer scince if you only want to become a programmer.
However, you will be a better programmer if you know how computer works (the actual science that it's based on).

So, it's your call really - it's all about how good you want to be.

How it looks it only mildly relevant. What you know is off supreme importance. Learning programming should always precede learning a programming language.

And programming courses are usually based on teaching a couple of languages. Computer science will be a better foundation for programming. Learning a language and not knowing what a doubly-linked list is, what it's used for and why you want or don't want to use one for the current program is like a doctor knowing bones, but not knowing biology.

Hopefully more experienced Developers can correct me if I'm wrong. I've taken both programming training courses and a Computer Science degree. The difference between the two is like night and day. A training course will teach you how to program in a specific language. A Computer Science degree gives you a much wider persective on the principles of computing and design. The latter has the potential to be tougher and more rigorous but so much more intellectually fulfilling.
