VMWare

So VMWare was I think the first company to create Virtual Machines.

They just went public a few weeks ago.

I'm confused though, doesn't Microsoft give out a similar VM software for free?

How is VMWare still in business?

VMWare is still in business because its product is alot better then MS's VPC

VMWare have professional versions as well, and it helps having a product called Fusion exclusively for the Mac. It allows Windows programs to be run from Macs just like they were installed on the Macs themselves.

Microsoft did have paid-for Virtual PC, but then they made it free (I think down to nobody using them as much as the competition).

How does Fusion compare to Parallels?

VMWare has something called ESX server. ESX server is an OS itsself that runs virtual machines. So you lose the overhead of caused by vmware running inside your operating system. ESX server costs a lot of money and I am sure VMWare makes a ton of money off of it.

VMWare has been out for some time hasnt it? I have a client (a community college) that has installed it on their servers over a year ago. I hate the program as it is buggy and really made my job harder.

I use a VM Client to test programs and websites I create, other than that I see no use for VM stuff!
