waht books are the best for learning visual basic 2005 and visual c++ 2005?

I have gotten a lot of use out of Murach's "Database programming with VB.NET and ADO.NET"

There is no such thing as "best book" - at least I don't believe there is. :)
The best way is to stop at your local book store and see it for yourself.
The "problem" is that different authors cover the same things with a different level of expertise - while one is an expert in communications another one could be a true guru in designiong databases ... and so on ...

So, my recomendation is:

- go to your local book store
- find books you really like
- write down titles, isbn, etc
- go on the internet and find what you need at the cheapest price as a whole package so you don't have to pay multiple shipments

Not only that but how you learn things is different from how I might learn something. So a book that I may have found particularly valuable may not work for you.

I'd also look at the author's site (if there is one), and reader reviews. I've saved a bundle more than once by not purchasing because of the reviews. More often than not, the reviews will be mixed. so you'll need to sort through them and figure out what's what.

Well, reviews could be helpful but often are controversial - as you said TG what's excellent for one person isn't so for two others (although I read them often as well just to get that initial flavor :) ).
"See it for yourself" works best for me, though.

Agreed. I spent nearly a whole day at the book store paging through every book they had before I bought my first VB.NET book. There's no other way to do it.

Ive actually found the WROX series very good. The language was quite simple to understand.

Although i do belive the statment above is right. I have quite a few VB books and i find different authors are better at explaining different topics of the language!

Both WROX and SAM books are sources that I've found, over the years, to be worth the money.
