Making A Migration

Hi all.

I'm sure you've all heard this story before. A long time Windows user wants to migrate away from the mold an into something more. However I'm looking more in the retrospect for the developer.

I do have some experience with Linux, namely RedHat and Debian, and very little with Solaris. As far as Mac goes, I have no experience on the development front. I do realize that most likely, a decent chunk of my knowledge is going to have to be tossed aside.

As far as development goes, I'm looking to want to develop on hardware that requires a serial or USB connection to download code to a device. For example the GBA, cell phones, PDA, pocket PC, remotes, etc...

So my question is what are your personal opinions on these platforms for this type of development? The pros, the cons, and any personal quirks you may have encountered along the way. Anything would help me out. Thanks in advance for your opinions.
