[RESOLVED] toolbox.msi
whenever i run visual basic now it says "configuring windows installer" then it says "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Toolbox.msi' in the box below"
if i click cancel it just does it again and loops. i can't think of anything i did to cause this except for i installed the k-lite codec pack today, but i don't think that will have afected it. before this happened i did notice some things going a bit funny like the progressbars weren't working on a form i made. when i done progress.value = 50 it wouldnt work, this is the ONLY code i had in the project, it was in form load, so nothing else could have been affecting it.
any help please?

Re: toolbox.msi
Have you tried running a virus scan?
Thread moved

Re: toolbox.msi
i have windows live one care and that should be constantly checking, i will run a quick scan now and a full scan tonight and leave that going while i'm asleep as it takes ages.
quick scan found nothing.

Re: toolbox.msi
Usually I see this issue with Office but on this one perhaps there is something that when installed corrupted or overwrote some shared resource.
What is it requesting for you to locate for install?
-
Re: toolbox.msi
I have also seen it for office. Usually after i have made a change to the user groups.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i done a full system virus scan, it found nothing.
robdog: it's requestng for me to find toolbox.msi
EDIT: i just searched my whole system with te keyword: toolbox. it didn't find toolbox.msi
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i just run one of my compiled exe's
it also does it when i try to run my compiled exe's!! :ehh:
-
Re: toolbox.msi
toolbox.msi is probably some sub program of some other program. Try a google search for toolbox.msi and see what pops up.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
I had this a while back. It was something to do with the newer windows installer. A trip to windows update fixed it up. Good luck. :)
-
Re: toolbox.msi
this is a good time to mention that the windows search program only will find files with a registered extension.
Also did you tell it to search system files and folders, and hidden files and folders?
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i told it to search everything with any extension
i just used windows update and updated everything they had for me to update but no luck :(
-
Re: toolbox.msi
Did you try updating your windows installer?
-
Re: toolbox.msi
whats that? how do i do that?
-
Re: toolbox.msi
Like mentioned in post #9.
Go to your Windows Update and do a custom search.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i just done that and installed every update for me on there there was about 5 then i restarted but it still won't work
-
Re: toolbox.msi
Download and install the latest and greatest here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Note the supported operating systems. ;)
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i installed that and restarted but its still doing it :(
-
Re: toolbox.msi
will i need to re-install vb?
-
Re: toolbox.msi
evidently you need to install "toolbox.msi" which is available on the cd. If you are using the express edition, you will probably have to re-download it (using the repair option in add/remove programs). This time when you do, copy the executable before the installer deletes it.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
Perhaps go to control panel->add/remove programs and uninstall the installer. Then go back to update.
I cannot remember exactly how I fixed it, it was a while ago but I installed an app and then uninstalled it and that is when the problem started. Mine was with all office documents not VS though. Something must have been removed that should not have been and it took a fair few tries to get it right again. Keep at it and you should get there.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
lord orwell: there is no repair option in add/remove programs. it only says change/remove
asmiscool: i went to uninstall the installer but it said if you uninstall this these programs might not work properly: and it had a long list of almost every program on my computer so i dont' know if i should uninstall it.
EDIT: my antivirus software just alerted me of a worm: Win32/Bagle.gen!C
i removed it but i don't know if any of it's babies are still lurking somewhere on my hard disk, i will completely scan my hdd again, maybe thats what caused it.

Re: toolbox.msi
this program is not working correctly as we speak. What have you got to lose.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
other programs will be affected too though, but i suppose they will go back to normal when i re-install it. i will do it after the virus scan has completed. it's currently on 43%. estimated 88 mins left.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
When you re-install disable your AV so it doesnt complicate the install process.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i uninstalled it then re-installed it and restarted but its still doing it :(
-
Re: toolbox.msi
Well you must have somethingthere if it un-installs completely that is still causing the issue dueing a new install. How about wiping out your system and reinstalling it all new. It would have to work with a fresh install.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
windows automatic update just informed me of an update i need it said that:
This is a reliability update. This update resolves an issue in the Windows Installer (MSI) that can affect performance during software updates. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
that sounds a bit like the problem i'm having, i'll install it.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
it is probably the problem I was having instead. There were some updates available on MS website that i couldn't install. The installer would lock up. After lastest patch the problem was solved.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
no it still won't work
i've gone without vb for almost a week now, i'm starting to get delirious and irritable. i can't cope much longer!
-
Re: toolbox.msi
Its got to be something related to a program on your system. If you reformatted it and installed all programs over again new and fresh it should work but test it each step of the way to identify which program is breaking VB.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i dont want to do that, it will take ages and all my settings will be put back to default.
i will uninstall the k lite codec pack which is what i think caused it because thats the last thing i remember installing before it broke. if that doesn't work ill re-install vb
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i just re-installed it from the cd and it still does it!
i searched the damned cd with keyword "toolbox" too and it didn't find it!
-
Re: toolbox.msi
search your registry for toolbox.msi
-
Re: toolbox.msi
If you re-installed VS from the CD and it doesnt work still then its probably not overwritting as its got an older date on the CD then what ever program is also using the toolbox.msi. Its going to be hard to track down but is your VB 6 CD original or a burned copy?
-
Re: toolbox.msi
my cd is an original one from microsoft.
you say that another program must also be using the file toolbox.msi but i have searched my whole system and that file doesn't exist.
how do i search my registry?
i think toolbox.msi is for the toolbox on the side and its also used when you add new things to it by going on add components. i did notice befor this happened that things were going a bit funny with the controls like the progressbars weren't displaying their value properly i set progress.value to 50 at form_load and it was displaying a full progress bar.

Re: toolbox.msi
If you had the msi on your system it wouldbnt be giving you all these headaches. ;)
If you uninstalled another program that may use it and it removes the msi then your vb will puke at you like its doing. If another program overwrte the msi and corrupted it or whatever it will be invalid. There inst too much you can do if its not on your system and some other programs shared componnet is conflicting with vb. Only thing that may be left is a reformat like I previously suggested. With all the time spent on this you could have been done already.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
i can actually get in to vb now but the thing still comes up, i just have to click cancel a few times, i think this is since i re instlled vb.
i will think about doing that, i will try a few other hings first though as i really don't want to do that and am only going to do it as a last resort.
-
Re: toolbox.msi
why didn't i think of this before? the wonderful system restore!
fixed it right up :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :afrog: :afrog: :afrog: :D :D :D :D
