I was just wondering if anyone used it and whether it does more than Visual Web Developer does or it does less or is the same.
Why did Microsoft make this? I thought that Visual Web Developer was what replaced Front Page?

No, you got it backwards. VWD is the Express version of ASP.NET in VS. Expression Web is the sucesor to FrontPage but I believe that it is such an "upgrade" that they decided the name change was so well worth their new product.
What would be the better option, Visual Studio or Expression Web for asp.net2 applications? Anyone using Expression Web by chance?
Visual Web Developer is free as such is Expressions and both support the .NET Framework 2.0. Which is better? It initially a matter of what your needs are for each project added to which tool is best for the job. ;)
I'm using Expression Web. It's good for when you want to create the layout of a page or to create a web template.
But once I am done with it, I can move all my HTML to the ASP.NET application and start programming from there.
Expression web - design pages
Visual Studio - programming
Expression web is optional. You can create your page layouts in notepad, dreamweaver, even front page ( )
Has anyone messed with this yet, Orcas?
Beta now I believe.

No not yet as I feel its too early to spend the effort to get into it.
Bty, posts should stay on-topic. ;)
I believe Microsoft is competing w/ Adobe so they produce a set of products for Macromedia/Adobe products users to shift to them.
It is obvious.
Yes, and this has been so for some time now. MS has also come out with Silverlight too. MS always tries to take out the competition with similar products.
My mistake. I originally thought Orcas was a successor to Visual Web Developer and/or Expression Web, but it appears after checking into it further it's the successor to Visual Studio using .Net Framework 3.5?Quote:

Expression Web is not really a successor of any Microsoft's products but a product to compete w/ Adobe's.
It is similar w/ Macromedia Dreamweaver.
And what do you think FrontPage was...
I believe FrontPage's Successor is MS Office OneNote 2007.
Fronpage, as I remember, it is more on WEB Page layouting/design.
And OneNote is the same.
These are only my observations.
No, FrontPage was retired because the next version was renamed Expression. OneNote was out back in 2003 and it is not the same. ;)
You may right.
Maybe MS realized that it is better to do it on Notepad so they stopped Frontpage.
Expression and Visual Studio is almost the same, they can be used to produce almost same products.
Well yes as they are both web development apps. ;)
You basically have three apps - VS ASP.NET, VWD (which is the Express version of VS ASP.NET) and then the Expressions which replaced FrontPage. Then you have Silverlight which is trying to take a piece of the pie away from Flash.
The Expression suite, including Expression Web, is aimed at designers while VS is aimed at coders. There is plenty of overlap between the products, just as there is overlap between the market segments they are aimed at, but their focus is very definitely different.
Also, Visual Web Developer is one of the core components of Visual Studio, along with Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual C++ and Visual J#. Each of those five core components has a stand-alone Express edition. Visual Web Developer Express is one of those.
You can also 'design' pages in Expression Web using ASP.NET form elements.

So, is it worthwhile to get the Expression Studio if you're doing a plain old boring public facing business info web site with secured ASP/ASP.NET Internet, Intranet, and Web Services behind the scenes?
Right now we're using VS 2005 for new web designs/applications, Interdev 6.0 for the legacy ASP stuff, Photoshop Elements or MS PhotoDraw (MS's 1st abortive attempt at a Photoshop-like program) for the few graphics we have, and a little bit of outsourced Flash development. My guess is that we wouldn't see much benefit from adding Expression to this mix unless we had a sudden need to add a lot of graphics to our site.
Probably not as it sounds ike you have everything you need.
Like mendhak and John said, Expression Web is a designer's tool. If you're a coder and designer, Expression probably isn't worth it; you can design your stuff in just Photoshop/graphics program of choice and then code up the HTML and CSS in Notepad or VS.
From what I've heard, however, the Expression family is very good. Much better than the abominations it replaced.
OneNote has nothing to do with web design, it is (as its name subtly suggests) a note-taking application and part of the Office suite.
