As long as you're careful what you download it's all good. A firewall is is better in my opinion. Prevention is better than the remedy
I use common sense.
I use Sophos, get it free from work.
None and have one system that has been running fine for ~4-5 years. Mostly just need to use common sense. The AV game is a conspiracy.
I tend to agree with that...Quote:

It may be your theory but I've heard the rumors.Quote:

I use Symantec gold version. Thats the company standard over here.

I have AVG installed in windows, but I've disabled the resident shield... and I don't use it much... So I'm sort of bordering between AVG and no install :D
Could be, they always say that they couldn't exactly trace where it came from. It might have been their own labs.Quote:

Any idea how to get rid of that without getting rid of the AV?
p.s. Uninstalling and re-installing does nothing, I still get the message.
I had similar problems with Norton (tho for me it was when any Office program started).
The support articles all say to uninstall/reinstall, and I couldn't find an alternative suggestion.. as my subscription had just expired I tried out AVG instead, and as it made my computer noticeably faster I kept using it!
I use Avast. Low memory usage, really good protection. I must say, i was somewhat shocked to not see it on the list...
I get the error message alot. I get it when:Quote:

me too, really nice software, and free too. combine that with the comodo firewall, you literally can't pay money for a better firewall, and you are better protected than paying hundreds for name brands. sometimes i wonder how there can be any money in AV at all :)Quote:

AVG . uses less resources than the majority of others out there.
Installed on 1.2Ghz PC with XP has little to no performance effect.
But bigger than viruses these days .. are malware.
Before using any protection software though, first you need to setup Windows XP properly. By Default it is wide open for attack, and prevention is always best.

But yeah I do know what you mean ;)
before I had installed anything on this pc it only took 4 blue bars to go across the screen for boot-up. :D
Common sense, secure network and by routing all net connections through a Linux proxy server.
No need to run AV or Firewall software on the PC's and they run very well too.
