[RESOLVED] Automatic Updates Win xp
i have a computer that i got from a friend and when i try to update using automatic updates i get an error saying Network policy settings prevent you from using this website to get updates for your computer. i know its something on the computer itself as i can update other computers in the house i've talked to my friend i got the computer from and he doesn't know.anyone know how to enable this ?

Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
It sounds like the system was previously on a domain that had a policy to prevent it as it probably was running some firewall program for the domain.
Check the local security policy.

Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
thx for the reply rob, you wouldnt happen to know where it would be in the LSP would you? i looked all around and couldnt find anything relating to it
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
If its not showing in the Security Options of the Local Security Policy then bring up Windows Firewall and see if there is a notice that the firewall is partially or fully controled by the LSP.
Is there a firewall client running in the systray? Is the system part of a domain or workgroup now? Its hard to locate since my systems are not controlled.

Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
its service pack 1 so there is no firewall
no there is no firewall client in the sys tray ( there is nothing running except for the things i installed) it is part of a workgroup atm

Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
Could it be possible that you may have some firewall or access restriction on the router?
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
that could be, is there a special port that auto updates uses? other than the http port?

Also make sure the Auomatic Updates service is enabled.
Though for performance, I'd suggest installing them manually and disabling Auto Updates. Check out SoftwarePatch for manual downloads.

Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
I don't see a point in automatic updates.I haven't updated my PC after SP2.Just a firewall and a good anti-virus.
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
just a couple security updates really needed .. if that ..
Windows Media Player updates .. there is a hole it in somewhere even on SP2 ..
I really dont bother with them myself, even though i put all 63 updates into a self extractable installer .. only used it once ..

Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
thx for the site rory i normally use softwarepatch but i got lazy on this computer anyway im still having problems the "windows update" doesnt show in the windows component part of the GP? any ideas why?
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp

You can just use IE though and select Tools, Windows Updates ..
BTW i have no windows update in my Local Security Policies also,
if thats what you mean? But I can still use Windows Update .. well not really as I disabled the service :D

Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
gp = group policy (gpedit.msc)

i dont need to update it
i just want to know how to fix this as it would be helpful to know
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
where is it supposed to be in there .. so i can see if I even have it ..
also make sure Cryptographic Services are enabled in the Services list or you will get an error when trying to update as well ..
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update
im using xp pro btw
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
ok yeah i have it ..
not configured though
Did this just happen? Is it your PC?
When creating a Pre install CD for Windows, you can choose not to install certain components at all, such as this.

not sure .. make sure it was installed from a default XP CD and not a custom one.
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
hmm im pretty sure it was a custom as his company uses a company image
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
With the amount of time spent, you could have reinstalled XP or at least did a Repair install. Do you have the XP CD?
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
maybe they used something like NLite .. you can remove components for your custom build. But you cant add them back in after the fact, at least not the majority of them, such as AU.
-
Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
the custom one ? no i do have another xp cd which came with my other system i could use for the repair correct?
ill take another look around at the system later on today if i still dont fix it then the hell with it
i was only trying to fix this for my own knowledge anyway not much of a big deal

Re: Automatic Updates Win xp
If you have no data on the system to save then make sure to do a complete format and clean new install.

Yeah that messed me up a few times while making some "special" builds for DVRs ... the first time I did it i got XP down from 500 or so MB to just over 200MB .. but had all kinds of errors, nothing worked LOL .. Now i leave the components alone, as you cant put them back if you need them, but just tweak it such as turning off services etc .. and other tweaks I would do normally after it is installed, but they are now done before hand. But at least I can always turn a service back on ..

Also, though not related to AU, there is a file in the windows, inf folder, called Sysoc.inf .. some components can be added/removed that arent on the Add Remove Component list .. by removing "hide" from the corresponding line in that inf file.
