What are the differences between XP Pro and Vista? I have heard hoopla but not from users...
Just the interface i think and some extra features like time control on users.
Well, for starters, Vista is a complete re-write from the ground up.... The interface is slick to say the least, and there's a number of new features.

Ok, that's the MS marketing... What's the user's view?
What about speed, Crash protection, ability to run existing software without having to upgrade.
Ability of not having a errant program freeze your computer because it is eating up cpu cycles. Cpu limitations per application.
Things such as that?
But for the truth sake Vista is only avalable for a few weeks to general public.Quote:

So, what reviews do you expect, randem? It'll take some time until everybody gets familiar with it.
However, in my opinion moving to Vista will have the same effect like it was from Win3.1 to Win95 - it's a first major re-write release in a long time.
Well, anyone who does serious work and uses Vista regularly will have something to say. Even if it's about porting applications, running older versions of MS products, databases, something...
Actually from my experiences I must say that Vista boots much faster than XP.
Well, people that do "serious work" as you say are every cautious about porting anything to Vista yet - most of us still remember what happend when Win95 came out...Quote:

No, AeroGlass theming is a feature of the framework and presentation.
so it will automatically be added?
If the user has Vista and his video card supports DX 9.0+ then it can be turned on just like any other theme was back in Windows XP.
Yeah but my xp installation is almost as new, since its a brand new pc. ;)Quote:

can you turn on classic start menu, classic shell, etc, to speed it up, or is it stuck with what it has?Quote:

I havent tried Vista yet, just wondering how it could be so much faster booting while it is said to be so much slower in general. I do plan to get it actually, just havent had time yet .. only will be for development/testing right now also.
I just loaded up a new PC with XP and it only took a couple seconds to boot up .. nice and fast .. course no HP All in one printers, scanners, etc, on startup to slow it down though .. only 3 user programs actually on startup, AVG, MSN Live, and Tweakui. :)
No it wasnt a preloaded XP PC. I bought the parts and built it myself.Quote:

thats about it..yeah they basically have the same software running on them.
I think its the m$ haters spreading too much false rumors about Vista :p
I agree! :D
Vista is heavy on the graphics and animations but then again so was XP when it first came out. It takes a while for people to get new faster computers and then when they do they are like its not slow running XP. So in a couple of years we will no longer hear anything about Vista being slow.
Its completely superfast for me anyways, even with the AeroGlass theming on. :D :thumb:
VS 2005 TS SP-1, VS 6.0 SP-6, Office Ultimate 2007 already installed and its still blazing!
How about classic start menu availability on Vista?
With XP I never use the XP Start menu as its too slow. .. ;)
PS. XP is a slow OS as it is by default, it requires tweaking. Course if you have Yoda's PC it really doesnt matter, you could run Nasa with that!
PSS. Ive been using the same PC (2ghz) from the ME days so i notice the diffs and hence had to learn how to tweak the heck out of XP ..
though even a newer 3.2 Celeron with DDR2 requires tweaking for XP ..
which is why i was asking about the those couple minor tweaks for vista ..
Just tried it out and tth Classic style for the start menu is just like it is for XP.
Xp should have been flying with that, its fast specs ...Quote:

I had to cut off my two other desktops as it was almost 3 MBs lol. Here is just my center desktop cut out and reduced in filesize/quality.
Mine looks better then yours :p :D
I didnt remove the wallpaper as I was too lazy lol.
Looks neat.Quote:

Even I have vista though I haven't installed it yet. I am kind of reluctant after hearing a rumor that it doesn't support vb6... Is that true?
That is false as it was true in the beginning stages of its development. Then they changed their minds and added support for the core runtime files. The VB 6 IDE does have a few minor issues but not really too bad.
There are some controls/dlls that are not tested and declared as supported but may work still. Anything from a third party (controls and dlss etc) wil probably not work as they havent produced Vista compatibilty in their stuff yet.
is the taskbar set fixed that big or can you adjust to a normal size like you can in XP?Quote:

Its the same as it was in XP. I just like it to show the start button completely as the circle is too large when its only single height.
These are all minor neuances of Vista. Any questions on the mentioned real differences?
Once it works .. :)Quote:

It does work and you only need to install it under an Admin account and run it as Administrator.
The doublebuffering issues in the IDE for the form designer is probably the biggest issue. There is a latency problem but is livable.
