Does enyone use Interdev to edit PHP scripts?
Do you know if there is an addon or otherway to get it to do colour coding, open pages up with the page source window open, put options to save .php files in the dialog boxes etc?
Basically I want Interdev to be able to do all the things with a PHP script that it can do with an ASP page...

I've only just heard of PHP, but I don't think its a microsoft product, so I wouldn't expect any joy with it in a microsoft IDE. Hey...butdon't quote me. You might be better off using somting that supports PERL debugging, But again....me iz only guessin' init'.

No...php hasn't been/isn't/will never be a m$ product...I just figured that as many m$ products can be very easily customized that maybe someone might have made a patch/addon or whatever to let it work with php.
Failing that...what's the best ide to write php in...aside from notepad :D ?

I dont' know about using PHP in the InterDev IDE but you might want to try using Textpad (www.textpad.com).
It doesn't have the features that InterDev has but it does support syntax highlighting for a range of languages including PHP , HTML , Perl ect.
It is only an evaluation version though.

im also looking at picking up PHP as I'm getting a lot of work requests on sites that only support PHP (not ASP =()

I read the first few pages of the "official PHP manual" and the first chapter of a PHP book ("Core PHP Programming" by Leon Atkinson) and I decided that it's totally useless -- if you need total speed in a Web application, use C. If you're worried about complexity, use ASP. If you want universality on all Web servers, use Perl.
PHP also seems like Perl with a few slight differences. It's quite difficult to learn if you aren't used to using C++ or Perl.

I didn't forget, I omitted. Remember, it's free to develop in ASP and Perl as well.
Java is free aswell. I got Borlad J Builder2 for freeo n a magazine and you can get a nice free IDE from sun microsystems for staight Java2 completely gratis. I've picked up loads of C and C++ compilers for free, they may not be the fastest or most efficient, but lets not forget that if you want the best code, get into assembler as the human thought process is far better than the best compilers money can buy.

You have to remember though that PHP is less complex than C and PERL and therefor quicker to develope in. And even though more complex than ASP/vbscript is gives you speed and cross platform advantages.
But the best thing about it is all the already built in functionality. It interfaces to so many different databases and PDF, Shockwave etc. To do most of the things that PHP has builtin for free in ASP would require third party components, most of which you would have to pay for.
PHP is one of the fastest internet languages so far. Believe it or not, this board is php based, and look how easily it can work with a couple hundred thousand posts (searching, loading, etc), and compare vBulletin (php) to UBB (CGI). PHP will soon takeover cgi in the internet world.. just wait and see
Well it just so happens that I bought "Core PHP Programming" by Leon Atkinson yesterday (sh*t 'tis quater past 12...guess it was the day before yesterday! :) )... anyway from having read the first few chapters I'm finding it easier than I expected... also my new lil intranet server at work is a Sun box so I need to know php or perl or c or do it all with shell scripts...suffice to say that I'm embracing php :)
So don't diss it, ok?

I just figured out how to make a few registry edits to be able get .php files edited in the same way as html files in Visual Interdev 6.Quote:
