I would create a medical research centre dedicated to eradicating the most lethal of diseases around i.e. AIDS, Cancer etc

One man does not need that kind of money. His charity is only intended as a publicity stunt. Give the money to research that can make a real difference to everyone around the world

The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation is the single biggest contributor to research and fieldwork to eradicate malaria which is generally considered to be the world's most lethal disease. So basically you'd do what he does :thumb:

Ironically, he doesn't push that much publicity when you consider what his foundation is doing. If you want publicity stunts, look at Trump. Considering what his foundation has done and is planning to do, I think the amount of publicity is very understated from what it should be. Additionally, if his foundation wasn't doing something right, then someone like Buffet wouldn't have donated $31 billion to the foundation and for Gates to help oversee.


I'd be willing to bet that within the next decade, his foundation does make a real difference in the world - especially for those living in Africa and 3rd world countries.

I think it is great that Gates has adjusted his focus of basically a computer for every person and instead has realized that some people simply need to have more basic things fixed -- basic things like medicine that will stop diseases that in third world countries kill, while in modern countries are non-existant.

If he applies the same monopolistic practices and the same detail for attention that I've been told he expects from those working with him, then I think his foundation will do a lot.

More to the question -

If I had Gate's money, I would hope to be able to do some of the same stuff he is doing, while also spending a good chunk to erradicate some of the issues within our own country -- issues like homelessness and quality of education.

Throwing money at problems doesn't help in the long term. I would have a lot more respect for Bill Gates if he used his power, money and influence to putting pressure on society to change a little.

He is going to try to wipe out diseases that are already virtually non-existent in modern countries, but are killing thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) . If that doesn't change society a little bit -- at least in Africa, then I'd be a bit baffled.


I don't see the Gates simply 'throwing money' at anything. From everything I've heard about working for Gates, the people getting the money will need to be accountable to him on what they are doing. If he takes the same approach he has in turning Microsoft into a monopoly, then I say, watch out world....

Brad is right, Bill Gates is super rich, so he does what a super rich person can do to help society, give lots of the wealth away where its needed MOST.

He has earnt a lot of respect, it goes without saying that such a prominent figure could put pressure in the right places to help out a lot more and help out in a somewhat more controversial way.

I am unsure exactly how much of his money goes charity but I am quite sure that if he gave away 90% of his annual earnings he would still be able to live a comfortable life. I was once told that wealth was like energy. It cannot be created or destroyed and whatever you gain, you can be pretty damn sure that someone somewhere is loosing out as a result.

At least Bill Gates DOES give money away... but now the complaint is about how much of it he gives away?

What about all the multi millionare/billionare people who give NOTHING at all away?

I don't know about you, but I sure as hell wouldn't want someone to tell me what I should give away, based on my salary alone, because I could still live well without 90% of it.

You can read here about what Bill Gates DOES do with his money, and believe me its a LOT, mostly focused on health and education.

Do you know that guy? I can't imagine ol Bill being a spokesman for ANY cause. He's a controversial figure, and not exactly a charismatic speaker. The one thing he has is money, and he's doing more with it than anybody else that I am aware of. His foundation is now the largest NGO in all of Africa, which is saying something.

But having money doesn't mean you can talk, nor does it make you a respectable figure in your own right. As far as I can see, he is doing exactly what he should do. We make heroes so that we can expose them to be human and tear them down. Who wants that. He wants to rack up thousands in speeding tickets, so maybe he shouldn't be a role model, except in how to use wealth for global benefit.

Just because there is a free version of linux doesn't mean companies aren't making lots of money of linux. Redhat and Novell are two of those companies.

Nope. Just that if MS wasn't the dominant provider of whatever software they may provide, someone else would be. So someone will always be making the money, its good that Bill Gates has chosen to give so much to charity.

We all could do a lot more. If we all did our bit rather than waiting for Bill Gates to spur us to action then maybe some of the worlds problems could be eradicated sooner.
