Howdy all,

I'm still stuck on DDR1 ram, and was wondering if its worth grabbing a few old 1gb sticks and throwing them in my PC, or just upgrading to DDR2.

Currently I'm sitting on 512mb of DDR1. Is the difference that large from DDR1 to DDR2?

The point is can you afford it? and do you really need an upgrade?
There definitely is a lot of difference amongst the two particularly the speed and the capacities.

Well, I do a bit of Video Editing these days, and its hell slow for me :/ I can hardly open the start menu whilst having the video editing software open :/

Then you should go with DDR2 @ 667 mhz atleast.An mb or so should be enough :thumb:

It only depends it your mobo van support it.

its not a "huge" difference .. unless you also upgrade the CPU and the mobo ..
just add more DDR1 if you dont want to do a total upgrade. Besides if you currently have DDR1 most likely you will need to change the mobo to upgrade to DDR2 anyway. Also make sure you arent using an old 5400rpm hard drive .. that'll slow you down as well.

LOL .. dont laugh man :wave: i just had to load my parents PC up with a 5400rpm 40GB HDD i dug up from the grave, as theirs died and needed it up ASAP .. man its slow .. anyway they are buying a new one soon .. i hope ..

The bus rate on the mobo will affect performance too.

More DDR1, the reasoning being that it's certainly faster in terms of responsiveness than any DDR2 on the market now, a standard latency for DDR1 is CAS3, it also goes as low as CAS2 (with CAS2.5 in the middle) this is pretty responsive RAM, DDR2 however is only capable of CAS4 in expensive brands, the average being CAS5 (Much slower)

However, DDR2 RAM will operate at higher frequencies (Some upto 1.1Ghz) where the average seems to be 533mhz. DDR1 Ram will only operate upto 500Mhz (and that's the top of the range stuff!) and averages 400Mhz.

DDR1 will not require any major upgrades to your system, however DDR2 will require a new motherboard and CPU at the very least.

DDR1 is the way forward in your case.

EDIT: What are the other specs of your machine? CPU/motherboard etc?
