Should I learn VB6 or .net?
Hi, I'm new to the forum and fairly new to VB and I would appreciate some advice.
Should I continue to learn VB6 or should I go straight to .net ?
How much of my VB6 knowledge would be relevent when using .net?
I've been learning vb6 for a few months now and I was going to do the MCSD course but now I'm not sure what to do.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I'd say 25 pages... :)
Anyway, start learning VB.Net as soon as possible and have no any doubts about it.
Re: Should I learn VB6 or .net?
Well if you want a MCSD certificate then you are out of luck as MCSD for VB 6 is retired and no longer available.
Now your time is a little better for VB.NET 2003 for an MCSD on it but with the release of VB.NET 2005 Microsoft changed the certifications altogether. No more MCSD for 2005 but rather MCPD and MPTS.
Re: Should I learn VB6 or .net?
VB 6 no longer exists. You should move on to VB .NET 2005.
Re: Should I learn VB6 or .net?
VB 6 still exists but the certifications for it from Microsoft do no, as I posted.
.NET 2005 is the preferred choice if you are just starting out and are wanting to work your way into the profession.

If you know VB6 then utilize it .. if you are new to programming then look at a new language .. but its good to know the old school stuff too.

But the trendline is the .NET forum showing more growth and actual member participation. So in actuallity the .NET forums are more productive, more member visitations, and a higher increase in growth rate.
VB 6 in the job market is all but dead. In the hobby programming world VB 6 is still alive but not for very much longer.

once someone has a copy of VB6 they will use it .. maybe not in a large commercial sales company but smaller peeps will still use it. They dont have the kind of cash others do. And its the end result that matters, not how you get there. ;)
Re: Should I learn VB6 or .net?
But there is the free .NET Express versions :)

Are you kidding? It's as big as it was 6-7 years ago (in my town) - don't know for how much longer, thou... :)
Re: Should I learn VB6 or .net?
In LA there is maybe 1-2 jobs posted each month as compared to 10+ for .NET, C# is more domanent too.
Re: Should I learn VB6 or .net?
Well, I was half serious... :D Although VB6 is in big demand (for now anyway) you cannot get just pure VB6 job - it comes as part of multiple reqs (VB6, VB.Net or C# for you programming skills, plus ... plus ... plus...). I can't say that C# has bigger market share either - it looks somewhat equal between the two (C# vs VB.Net).
Re: Should I learn VB6 or .net?
Yes, correct. I have not seen a primary VB 6 position in a very long time.

You wish... but there isn't anymore - they want one person doing 10 jobs at the same time [serious] and it's not cool. Although, the "pay" part could be good but you might not want it after awhile. :ehh:

Yep .. thats what I figured .. though I havent looked at jobs in a long time ..
Reason i work for myself last 10 years now .. well not software .. other stuff .. pay isnt great most of the time, but sometimes big jobs come in and make it worth it, but same thing, cant just do one thing anymore. I dont know if I could work for someone else now, even if it did pay great :)
Re: Should I learn VB6 or .net?
Well it would be the primary language but other stuff added in tooo like SQL, web etc. Just any position with VB 6 without .NET is what I meant.
.NET positions pay more. ;)
