I downloaded the VTM's from www.3dbuzz.com to get started when I was first learning PHP, and they're quite helpful. you'll need to be a member to download them (membership is free), but they're free and a good place to start. if you go to the main page, at the top you can click "video training," and near the bottom there's a PHP/MySQL category.

I started by reading the PHP Manual downloadable from www.php.net
