Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Either I get a blank Ad (large upper right corner), white Ad, or the HP/ PEBKAC #17 that make the site slower then dialup!
The Ads that do load seem to be transering too much data perhaps as the packets are continuously incrementing while the page is hung.
Anyone else getting this?

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
And #12 steals the cursor.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
I guess you didn't expect a reply from me.
But I promise I won't say it. Because you know. You just don't admit.
Now that we got off the comedy channel, no, I haven't had any problems recently that I could recall. Web's been fine, even on VBForums. Didn't bother to test with IE, though. I can do it, but only if you pay me for doing it. You can pay me in "thanks".
Edit
Dumb me, I just noticed I don't have JavaScript running because I have NoScript :D I can see Google ads, but other ads that aren't hosted by this forum (which would be all of them) are well hidden, because the script for them doesn't run.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Is it only for the PEBKAC ads?

What browser are you using, Marty? ANd what version? I am yet to face the cursor stealing problem but I keep hearing about it.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
I never should say there hasn't been problems. I had to post the edit page twice to get it sent. "Server could not be located blah blah blah".

IE6 SP2, and coincidentally as I was typing this just now I noticed that only the first part of what I had typed showed up, and lo and behold, the guy with the glasses and earphones in PEBAK #12 was staring at me from the ad corner.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
BTW, I'm leaving within the hour for a weekend vacation so I may not be able to respond any further right away.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Seems like things have gotten a bit better but I noticed that when the Ads play everything slows down and there are packets transmitting back and fourth.
Running XP SP-2 and IE6 SP-2 with all the latest Windows Updates applied.
I have noticed that an Ad steals the cursor too. Very irritating. :)

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Somebody email me the source code for the page when it contains the cursor stealing ad. Email Webmaster at this site with it.
Thanks,
Brad!

on my PC, it normally runs fine, but sometimes it does.
just check the size of each page. i have been constantly checking the size of VBF pages for the past few months. almost all the pages now exceed 100 KB (only 1 or 2 exception) whereas it used to be vice-versa before.
2 cent/opinion/suggestion etc: Could Administrators just check, for the sake of clarity if the ads are causing the problems, by disabling them for 1-2 days??

If I turned of the ads for even an hour, I would likely be asked to find another job.
Regardless, ads are constantly changing, so doing this today would not resolve any new ads placed on the site tomorrow. Additionally, most ads come directly from our advertisers servers and not ours.
What we can do is check out each ad that seems to be causing an issue. Jupitermedia has people whose jobs are to work with the ads and the advertisers. They assume ads are okay. If one isn't, then they will look into it. I just have to let them know a few things:
- what ad might be an issue (screen shot)
- what page - to help identify the ad - source code from page with ad
- what is the issue.
If you can get me that type of information, then I can have them dig into the ad or talk to the ad agency about the ad. In many cases the agency doesn't know there is an issue until we bring it up. Most of the ads we show run on lots of sites across the web -- including sites that are not Jupitermedia. We tend to point out a lot of the isuses though. Things like focus issues are usually found by us and not others because on an 'article site' there isn't text entry boxes that require focus so people don't see it happening. With messages boxes on this site, that type of issue becomes very clear, very fast. It is also an easy one to explain to ad agencies so they can fix it.
Bottom line - let me know the details on an ad and I'll pass that info to our ad guy. He can then work to get it fixed. If it doesn't get fixed within 48 hours, hit me with it again.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
What are these Ads advertising? Why dont they state something instead of forcing you to play them? They take up bandwidth for no appearant reason.
PEBKAC #3
PEBKAC #12
PEBKAC #17
PEBKAC #18
The guys just type away and now sales pitch of any kind until you play it.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
I've asked or primary "ad guy" to take a look at this thread and see if he can figure out which ads you guys are saying cause problems. Nobody sent me any emails regarding page source, so I don't have that to forward to him....

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Hasnt happened for me since that day but the cursor stealing ad is hard to track down.
But they all do take up some bandwidth when they are viewed (not played) for 30 seconds or so.

I have seen this spastic ad a few times. It toggles between two frames very quickly.

This ad is among those that's causing the cursor stealing.
-
Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
A couple of the ads have been removed from this site until the advertisor can have a chance to look at them and see if they can make fixes.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Brad, the cursor is being stolen again by the PEBKAC ads and its very annoying. If you need the source code to get someone to look at the problem again, please remind me what I need to do.
-
Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Not only that it stills the cursor it also sends me back to previous page while replying and it happens more often now especially when PEBKAC is shown.
I did notice that before but cannot recall which ad was it.
-
Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
I think its #9. But the navigation to the previous page is caused by the cursor being stolen and perhaps pressing a shortcut key?
I have experienced it several times resently as the PEBKAC ads have recently returned.
-
Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Well, when you reply you obviously typing but whether or not there was some shortcut keyed I simply don't know.
-
Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Ok, it is #9 as it just did it to me on this post.
I think the nav back is from the "Alt+left arrow key" combination due to the focus issue?
-
Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
OK, but I couldn't possibly press those keys - am I missing something?
I might have Shifted to UCase or something or perhaps CTRL+C(V/X) but that's about it...

Backspace also goes back, so if the ad "grabs" the keyboard focus while you are typing then pressing backspace would cause you to navigate backward one page.
-
Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Backspace makes sense... I just wonder how much longer are we going to suffer from this nonsense?

Since we (Jupitermedia/VBForums) don't create the actual ads, it won't suprise me if ads continue to get through that do bad things like steal focus. As we see them, if we can get the source code for the page with the ad that does it, then I can give that to our internal ad people and they will go back to the agency or company that created the ad and get them to fix it. One by one, we can get them fixed.
The source can be captured and posted here, or emailed to webmaster (at) this site's name with a note saying the ad steals the cursor.

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
Can it (the "ad") at least go through mandatory testing? I know it sounds silly but it's still better than manual identifying and hopefuly "getting fixed".
They will keep comming regardless so we will keep complaining so you (the JM) will keep getting back to angency - endless cirle.
Instead why not catch it before it goes live?

Re: Ad(s) Causing Very Slow Page Loads
It's not that simple. Most of the time the problems some users experience on the forums, never affect others. I've yet to be able to reproduce any of the issues I read in the complaint threads. I try, and I do have all the major browsers loaded, but for some reason I can't get these things to happen on my system.
