Burning DVD-R - how close to the disc's capacity should I go?

Hi folks,

I've been using Easy CD-DA Extractor (http://www.poikosoft.com/) to rip my CD's to the *.mp3 format and I'm wondering how close to the stated capacity of 4.7GB can I safely burn to a blank DVD. The file size of my collection currently stands at 4.61 GB (809 tracks/63 Albums - ripped at CD quality)
Is this OK or is it too much to burn to one disc? How much space is required(if any) for a table of contents?

I realise that the cost of experimenting with a blank disc is negligible but I'm curious all the same. Thanks for your help. Happy coding.

I think, if you use Nero Burning Rom, it will warn you (or will not burn at all) before burning if there is not enough space.

Try it in Simulation mode. It will not destroy your DVD.

BTW, I don't have a DVD writer. I'm writing this from my experience with CD-Rs. But Nero should act same for both.

As with CD-Rs, all DVD-Rs should be manufactured with more than the advertised capacity. That means you can safely burn to capacity and usually a few MB over as well.
