New graphics card causes blank screen
I've updated my graphics card and when I boot up all I get is a blank screen.
No BIOS messages
No grub menu (my pc is dual boot)
My default OS is ubuntu linux and the Gnome login eventually appears for that and things look ok once I log in.
However when I change the default to XP the screen just stays blank.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
Which graphics card is it? (Brand - model), and which driver do you use? (Link - Version)
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
The card is a point of view GeForce 7800 AGP which uses nVidia technology.
My old card was an nVidia MMX 440 AGP
In windows I removed the old drivers prior to installing the card.
Because I can't get into windows I haven't added the drivers that came with the CD.
I've made no changes whatsoever to the linux setup
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
Ok, did you try starting Windows in safe mode? (F8) if it starts fine you can install the drivers then.
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
If it doesn't show GRUB then it shouldn't be a driver problem, BIOS and GRUB use VGA mode which every card supports.
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
I haven't tried to access safe mode I assume I can just keeping hitting F8 and hope for the best.
I'm not at home at moment so I can't try any suggestion till after work.
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
is hti brand new out of the box??
remove the card. put the old one back in.
Boot.. let windows find your card and install its basic drivers for it.
then shut down.(DOnt unistall the drivers...) remove the card, put the new one in. make sure its seated well, and its power cords are plugged in (if it has them)
make sure your monitor cord is also attached well.. and i dont mean this the wrong way.. but make sue the monitor is turned on ;).. hey it happens
then boot again...
anything? if you are not getting any error beeps then u might have a bad card... return it and get a new one.
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
It is brand new. I've checked the monitor (a message appears whenever I plug it out of the card). I'll try inserting while keeping the drivers for the old card.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
When I got my new card, I had to uninstall the old drivers and used a tool called DriverClearner to make sure ALL the drivers were removed.
You can find DriverCleaner here: http://www.drivercleaner.net/index.php
Be sure to read the instructions on how to use it carefully.
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
I've used DriverCleaner with no success, I've also updated the BIOS. I going to get a bigger PSU and see does that make any difference.

The PSU is big enough in Linux, so it's big enough for the card.
Re: New graphics card causes blank screen
This is the first time I've ever had a piece of hardware that was more trouble to get working in Windows than in Linux.
If neither OS worked I could understand but this is really stumping me.
