2003 server Terminal services licenses advice please
Hi I need to give terminal services login abilitiy for 3 different 2003 server machines to at least 3 users on our domain (i.e. 9 concurrent logins over 3 machines).
Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server User Client Access Licenses come in blocks of 5 or 20. Can I buy 2 x 5 user licences and split them over the 3 servers??
Re: 2003 server Terminal services licenses advice please
They come as individule licenses. Usually you can get Server 2003 with 5 CALs and then you only need to buy the other 5 TS CALs. Since your using multiple servers, what are they? Small Business Server 2003, Server 2003, and ? or ??

3 x Server 2003 (db, dev, test). They each have 2 built in terminal services licences, but we keep exceeding the number of allowed sessions.

You only get 2 Admin CALs with Server 2003.
If your servers are connecting to the other server then yI think you need device CALs for that and the User CALs for any concurrent logons, etc.
Re: 2003 server Terminal services licenses advice please
we will be using xp pro workstations to terminal into each the servers.
If we get 2 x 5 user licenses can we set it up so that 3 separate uses (on 3 different xp pro workstations) each a session (with admin privilages) on each of the the 3 2003 servers:
i.e.
user1 on xp pro workstation 1 has 3 sessions running (2003 server DB, 2003 server Dev, and 2003 server Test)
user2 on xp pro workstation 2 has 3 sessions running (2003 server DB, 2003 server Dev, and 2003 server Test)
user3 on xp pro workstation 3 has 3 sessions running (2003 server DB, 2003 server Dev, and 2003 server Test)
?

Hmm, Im not very good at CALs myself but it looks like your needing the two default Admin connections so thats 6 . Now you need another 3 to finish up the scenerio you have posts. Need verification of this but I thing thats all you need.
Are the cons to the db server actual remote conns or just db conns via code or enterprize Manager or something?
Edit: 29,000 Posts! Woot! :D

they are remote conns.
quenstions I need to answer are:
1. Once we get terminal server running, can we add the 2 exisitng terminal services cleint user licenses to the list of available licences?
2. If you purchace 5 more licences, can you then by 5 more and add them to the original 5 to make 10?
Re: 2003 server Terminal services licenses advice please
1. TS comes with 2 licenses for Admin connections/logons standard and are non transferable.
You can add any number of licenses you want as you can buy them in any increments.
2. Yes and part of number 1. also rmember that SQL server requires its own CALs as well as Server 2003. Terminal server CALs must match the Server CALs one to one for your remote connections.
