Users trying to solve IT problems

It's been a day... I'm already stretched to my limits with people. We have a card system where truckers scan their cards to dump their loads. It's all automated, takes the sample and everything. I just happened to be at one of the locations and saw this guy close the program and reopen it. Naturally, I was a little curious about why. And so goes the story:

Me: "...Why'd you close that?"
Him: "It's been giving me an error."
Me: "What kind of error, I didn't see anything?"
Him: "Well, I closed it before it popped up. It works after I close it and reopen it."
Me: "Ok... So, when were you going to let me know we were having problems?"
Him: "I'm not the guy who normally does this, so I didn't want to deal with it. Instead, I issued them a new card and hope that'll work."
Me: "And you were going to tell me we had duplicate truck cards... When?"
Him: "It's only a temporary thing. We were going to go back as soon as it started working again."
Me: "But what about database integri... Nevermind, exactly when did you forsee the error fixing itself?"

As it turns out. The error is exactly what I warned the third party vendor about when they switched to a SQL backend. They left apostrophes in the name of the company (untreated). Now the guy's gone all week and I have to explain to everyone what's going on. And I can't wait for him to get back. Whenever one of these problems happen, he always says the same thing: "sounds like a SQL issue.. We didn't have that problem before." Which leaves this sick feeling of "you can legally sell this?" in my stomach.

I think he should be a trucker

Always does my head in when things go wrong and they don't tell you when you could fx it easily.

As long as there are people who base their purchasing decisions mainly on price, yes.
