It's probably because that area of the world often goes for Linux etc, so MS are trying to be more "friendly" and less American.
Companies now have to use every possible race in their pictures to appear politically correct
Because Asian people are smarter than the rest of us, and we should look up to them as our superiors!

Whats their strategy? I would imagine they are doing what their title is... marketing. Population of asia? 3.6 billion. Population of the U.S.? 300 Million. Thats more than a 10 fold larger market. Asia consists of over half of the world's population...
On a side note, only about 360 million of Asians are online, almost about 10 percent.
