When I try to start a session with PuTTY I get a "Host does not exist" error.
The same effect happens when I ping either the host name (thanks to www.dyndns.com) or the IP address.
However, I have no problem getting ping results from somewhere like www.dnsstuff.com.
Does this mean that my work firewall is blocking all ping echoes?
If I can't ping my home PC from behind the work firewall then is there nothing I can do to connect remotely?
Seems like work has employed some IT people that actually know what they are doing and beefed up security!
If there's a reason you should be accessing your office PC remotely, there's probably a VPN on the network. You just have to get one of those "know what they're doing" types to set you up on it - on both ends, office and your home PC. Then you can do the putty thing or just use a VNC.
Do you connect to the Internet via a proxy server? If so, you'll need to configure this in Putty.Quote:

That's the way its meant to be. Just imagain the letters show up, tpye the password as normal and press enter.
As I am figuring out to make my DVR accessible over the internet I would like to use your 'Goto my pc' configuration in order to 'remotely' change settings on my computer/router from a different network, as you know it already I am having trouble setting up my DVR, my question is, is it possible that I can successfully set-up your configuration even if I am having a problem setting up my DVR? I am wondering if they have similarities in setting up like there is also a need for port forwarding err... DNAT?
I think you mentioned that your DVR requires UDP. If that is the case then it won't be possible because SSH tunnelling is TCP only. You can however use a VPN; have a look at OpenVPN which is a free SSL based VPN for Windows and Linux.
No, its TCP as stated in the documentation. :-)Quote:

I have yet to test it on a different network outside my LAN so there is no progress for now. What I really want is to be able to control my computer remotely so that I can change the router's setting remotely, your set-up seems feasible so I would like to try it. I also came this TightVNC thingy, I am looking into it if I need to set some porf forwarding also to make it work. I have looked into Remote Desktop but it needs port forwarding so I am shying away from it since it may not work just like with the DVR.
