Whistler

Did anybody know anything about Microsoft's new system code named "Whistler"?
And how it is going to affect us, programmers?
I heaed it will be very stable comaring Win98/NT/ME/2000.

I think Wistler is going to be an upgrade for Win2000. So it would probably be the same looking system with few inhancements.

What exactly is the "Whistler"?

It's just a development code name. For example VB originally had a code name Thunder, that why all controls in VB have class names like this: ThunderListBox, ThunderComboBox, ThunderTextBox etc.

hmmm why the hell do they give progs other names then publishing them? it's like making it harder to understand :)

Think of it that way:
You're developing one big program and you have no idea how to call it, but you will not stick to the name subject a lot of time so you just jot some name with no relation to the app itself. Do you think Thunder relates to Visual Basic or that Mozilla relates to Netscape?
After you finish the app you think about the name until you find something that clicks. ;)

Whistler is M$ big move to merge Windows 9X and NT. The new OS will be based on the NT kernel and it will have a few version: Homeuser, Professional, Server, Andvanced Server and proly Datacenter Server. The only difference between the homeuser version and the professional one is that the home user one will be a lot more user friendly like win9x and the pro version will be more like win2k pro (DUH)

so now u might be wondering which version to get?? Well if u like advanced stuff you really should go with the pro one but if u like win9x because it's easy and all well i have to say homeversion all the way, ill proly get the pro version for me and the home user for my parents since they sux with computer ^_*

Hum....oh yeah btw Whistler is just a codename, the name it will be release on is Windows.NET 1.0 and the home version will be named personal edition

Actually Windows 2000 was the merge of Windows 9x and NT. Whistler, as it appears now, is going to be the first of Microsoft's .NET operating systems. It supposed to have a different UI, more Internet-centric. It will also be the first OS with special support for C#, Windows Forms, etc. I think, to answer the original question, that Whistler will affect the programmers positively.

Sorry but Win2k was only a step in the NT/9X merge, Whistler will be based on the NT kernel but will be compatible with all the Win9X application (32bit)

Except for a few programs that Whistler will not likely support due to DLL conflicts, etc, Windows 2000 is compatible with most 32-bit applications, yet is based on the Windows NT kernel. Windows 2000 has a problem with a few games, but most mainstream applications work fine.
