[RESOLVED] Something is using Com3:
I tried to fax something from my laptop for the first time in a few months, but couldn't get a dial tone. The modem has always been on Com3, so I deleted it, restarted the computer, and it came back on Com7. I tried to change it back to Com3, but see that Com1, Com2 and Com3 are IN USE.
How can I find out what is using those ports? I have a WIFI setup, so I haven't used a modem for years. I don't fax very often, but it's nice to be able to when the need arises.
The diagnostics check out, so I think the hardware is working properly.
I don't know if I ever faxed anything since I did a reinstall during the summer, but I think that I did.
Thanks for any clues. This is an XP Home HP Pavillion 5400
Re: Something is using Com3:
This too tough for anyone? Just wanted to map com ports to apps.
Re: [RESOLVED] Something is using Com3:
I unchecked "Wait for Dial Tone" and it started dialing. Still on Com7:, but at least it's working. I don't know what happened, though. I had installed a USB Scanner, but it is rarely connected. I wonder if that used Com3:. As far as the dialtone goes, that remains a mystery. Maybe Windows Update installed a driver that doesn't work?
Re: [RESOLVED] Something is using Com3:
Are you sure you didn't install a "Mat USB to Serial Bridge" ?
They take up Com ports :/
Re: [RESOLVED] Something is using Com3:
I didn't install any software with it. I did install MS Office Document Imaging, though. The scanner used the TWAIN drivers. Someone had given it to me when he upgraded. His has a Paperport utility, but I didn't install it.
