[RESOLVED] Small Problem With Connection

Hello, I am having a little problem with my router / main computer, had to turn off all the electricity before and when I turned computer back on it wouldn't access the internet, all other computers are ok but this is the one I use the most.

I went to CMD > ipconfig and the ip is usually 192.168.2.1 but this time it was something different.

And now on my laptop the IP is 192.168.2.1, I am not very experienced in the networking area and didn't actually set up this one!

If anyone can help me out it would be appreciated :)

Here are a few details that might come in handy that are from my router / laptop.

DNS Servers : 192.168.2.1
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
IP Address : 192.168.2.102

There are three things to look at when you can't access a network:

The station jack into which the machine is connected. Try a different station jack and see if the results are the same.

The cable connecting your maching to the station jack. If the results are the same at a different jack, try a different cable.

The NIC card (Network Interface Card). If none of the above works, swap out your NIC card and see if that makes a difference.

If that's the info from your laptop then it's IP is 192.168.2.102, not 192.168.2.1. I'd guess that 192.168.2.1 is actually your router (since that's what's listed as the DNS server).
Like Hack says, check your machine has a link to you switch/router. Also;
Under ipconfig on your main machine does it list default gateway and DNS server?
You said the ip was 'different', was it still 192.168.2.XXX? If not try ipconfig /renew.

Turn off the router, the laptop, and the desktop. Then, turn off the cabel/dsl modem for 30 seconds. Give it a few minutes to boot up, and when you see the on-line light (or have 3 or so lights) then turn on your router. Then, turn on the desktop. You should be set. Then turn on the laptop.

Internally, what does this sequence do that would clear up the connection problem?

Hey guys, it is deffinetly not anything wrong with my cables as they were working a few hours before hand, what happened was we had to turn the electricity off to change some lights and my computer was on while we turned the electricity off and then when we turned it back on I cant get it to connect anymore, I tried turnin all the comptuers and laptop off and then restarting modem and router but it didn't make a difference.

Anyone have any more ideas of how I could fix it?

What router do you have?
If you know all the correct addresses try assigning it a static IP.

The DNS sounded unusual. The modem has to be online to give out an IP address, and it will give the first address to the first computer plugged in.
I got a call today from someone experiencing the same problem, who did the same thing, with similar results. I'm going there tomorrow to try to straighten things out. She had a WIFI computer that has a drive mapped to .0.1, so it has to be first. I'll post back with results.

I would try to hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn off the desktop computer. This will do a complete shutdown. It might be stuck in hibernate mode.

If you do fix it please post how you did it as I really need to get this fixed :(

I just had to cycle the power on the dsl modem. For some reason, the USB quit giving a signal to the computer. Everything came up correctly when I did that.

Mine is a cable modem. And how could i cycle the power ?

Unplug it for 30 seconds. You can also reset it back to default conditions by holding the reset button when you plug in the power, and the settings (should) be reset.

Found a spare network card lying around, put that in and it worked :| when we turned the electric back on in our house it must have fried the card or something. Atleast its woring now, thanks for the help guys :)
