What OS are you running and which programs are you trying to install? Do you have permissions to install?
I am using Win XP. Several of the programs were installed previously without any problems. (The programs themselves are in Program Files; I have to go there to activate them - it is just that I can't get any shortcuts to appear on the desktop)
Are any icons at all shown on the desktop ? if not, right click the desktop, Arrange Icons By -> Show Desktop Icons.Quote:

Yes, I have about 10 icons on the desktop, but since about 3 weeks ago I can't manage to get any new shortcut icons on the desktop. (There is no virus on my PC).
What about just right clicking on the desktop and creating a new shortcut to any application or file?
Yes, that works... thanks...(forgot about that)... I am just wondering what happened that it can't be done automatically when I install a new program. Another strange thing I noticed is that whenever I drag an icon from the recycle bin to the desktop, it disappears completely!
Umm, dont you mean from the desktop to the recycle bin? I dont believe you ccan drag stuff outside of the rb unless you opened it up in folder view.
No, I really mean I drag the icons from the Recycle Bin to the desktop. I've often done that in the past.
OK, I see what you mean...yes, I open it in folder view before I drag the stuff to the desktop.
