Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
Hello, I would like to know whether the VB6 runtime files are still included in Windows Vista as they are in Windows XP.
Obviously, I am referring to the basic runtime files (MSVB60VM.DLL and OLEAUT32.DLL) that allow a VB6 application to run on condition that it does not use any OCX libraries.
I heard (but I'm not sure) that MS Anti Spyware will be included in Win Vista and, since it was developed in VB6, the runtime files should still be there.
Anyway, if there is somebody who has already installed the beta of Win Vista, I would appreciated it if he or she could answer my question.
TIA

Not including the VB6 runtime files in the next version of the OS could be a way to persuade VB6 developers to switch to VB.NET. Just guessing...
Re: Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
Antispyware was developed in VB6
Im not sure about that

It is developed in VB6, and why couldn't it be? If you don't believe me download it if you don't have it and use Spy++ to check the class name of the main window.
Re: Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
I thought C++ is a more powerful language?
Re: Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
It depends on how you define a powerful language. The strength of VB is that it's a RAD tool and development goes very quickly, while C++ is far more complex and therefor often requires a longer development time. So in that sense VB has the power over C++.
Why couldn't an Anti-spyware program be written in VB? It's just a matter of scanning files and registry entries.
Re: Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
But will MS Antispyware be included in Windows Vista or not, as far as you know?
Re: Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
I dont know. Is it included in the Beta version?

I don't have the Win Vista beta installed on my computer. That's why I started this thread.

You may find the following link of some interest:

Particularly, there is a statement that should reassure classic VB6 developers like me:
Quote:
...the Visual Basic 6 runtime is slated to ship as a part of Windows Longhorn, which means that it will be covered under Longhorn’s support lifecycle.
Re: Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
Moved to General Developer.
Re: Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
I dunno about Antispyware, but the VB6 runtimes will be included in Vista and Vista's support period, which ends in 2008. So they'll be around for a while, fortunately/unfortunately :)
Edit: whoops didn't see your quote which already covers that
Re: Are VB6 runtime files included in Windows Vista?
Hi,
Yes the release version of Windows Antispyware will be included on the release version of Windows Vista (the final Beta is available to MSDN subscibers) which includes the Beta 2 of Windows antispyware.
When antispyware will be introduced to the ccommunity as a release version, I dont know, but I bet a dollar to a nickel that they hold up on this thill afer the Windows Vista release.
