Router Trouble

I have a friend with an SMC7004ABR router. Recently, after unhooking the hardware temporarily, he now can't access the internet through the router. He can access internet directly through the modem, but when the router is hooked up, he can't access it. WHen hooked to the router, pinging the router (192.168.2.1) replies fine, and we can access the router config settings... Just no internet! Please help! I've messed with the Connection settins a little (IP AND SUCH) but to no avail... please help!

Have you tried to release/renew the ipconfiguration?

If not, in a command window, type "ipconfig /release"

When it is finished:

Type "ipconfig /renew"

See if that helps

Ok, and when i do this, should I have the Network settings set to "Obtain IP Automatically?"

Yes, in the windows environment, if using dhcp the Obtain Automatically should be checked. The routine I suggested essentially clears everything out and then puts it backin again. If you run your modem without the router it may update to another address, then when you reconnect the router the settings are messed up. Running the ipconfig should set them straight again if that was the problem.

Did you try to reboot the machine? That gets an IP address from the network card first. You probably had the default 169... assigned when the hardware was disconnected.

It's ipconfig /release all, btw, unless you specify the adapter.

If you disconnected all the hardware, turn off the dsl/cable modem, router and computer, plug the broadband device, the router and the computer in. First tur on the broadband device, and let it boot up. Then, plug in the router, and let it boot up. Then turn on the computer, and you should be good.

I assume that you are not using XP? (although the solution is the same.)

I'm running XP, yes, what makes you assume otherwise?

XP usually recognizes a DHCP server. W2K and before used to revert to 169.254.0.1 as soon as you unplugged the cable.
