Mainly looking for a FTP server and an SSH server app. I don't care if it's freeware or not.
I'd like to know which ones you guys think are the best ones.... also any other network utility app that comes to mind? :afrog:

Putty is a good client that has ftp and telnet with SSH. It has Linux and Windows versions.
ah cool:D
I think I've never actually tried putty, as famous as it might be heh
:)
PuTTY is absolutely fantastic. I wouldn't recommend anything else.
anyone's tried RemotelyAnywhere btw?
it comes with ftp ssh telnet and has remote desktop abilities:D
Well as an alternative to FTP for a Linux machine, you could use an SCP client (which I believe is SFTP). WinSCP is a good one for Windows.
SCP is an SFTP client but it can also drop back to SSH. I use SCP to syncronize my website over SSH. It works a dream.Quote:

ah I'm still confused:(
what is SCP now? is it just a secured ftp?
Well cp isthe copy command in the UNIX command line interface. SCP is the Secure copy Command. It allows you to copy files via SSH from one machine to another over the Internet.
SFTP is different as it is FTP tunelled through an SSH connection. Making it Secure - hence SFTP :)
ah I see
so it's really SSH:D
ok how about SSL? I've heard you can have that on a FTP connection too. Wouldnt that be secure enough? if so, then what's the the point of SFTP?
