VHS to DVD

We have some old videos that my mom is starting to panic that they are going to break (or something will go bad) and she was asking me if I can create backups on DVDs to make sure we dont' lose them... What would I need to do that? Any ideas?

You connect your VHS to it, and it'll save the movie as an mpeg. You'll then be able to burn it to DVD.

If you've got a good GFX card it may have a video in....

In which case I would need some more things? I'll have to check but if I have? What software will I need?

If you do all you'll need is the cables to connect it and some video capture software (which would have probably came with the card)

How is the quailty of the video's ,mybe you should be thinking aleast maintaining what you got , I use to get good results with a Nvidia gforce4 4600ti grafix card using the svideo option if not then video in will have to do, yes it came with the software to do this,

Also . dont try to do it all at once give your computer a rest to maintain good quailty .also hardrive free space can be a issue

What my dad has in his computer that he bought a few months ago was a Video capture device, that has RCA connections. Here's a link to one that costs $99

That's basically the same as the Dazzle, execpt it's internal.

Bringing this back to life... Since I still haven't bought anything yet, another thing occured to me : is there any need to specify PAL or NTSC? Is there an option? Is it automatic? Just to be sure since I have VHS from both formats...

PAL or NTSC are both handled.

What do you have for software to handle this whole operation? Sometimes it's best to buy over-the-counter home-use software that will come with the hardware interfaces needed - you can save lots, if that is your desire.

btw - the disk space required can be extensive for this type of work. Also, when capturing make sure you turn off all services and things like virus-software.

No software, nothing yet... Just the idea :)

Why is it important to stop AV software and services? :ehh:

Capturing Video is very memory intensive. So, by shutting down any unneeded services and programs, you'd have more memory to devote to capturing.

Most of the capture software and hardware cannot keep up with the live-stream of data - and you get frame drops or out-of-sync audio problems.

I am concerned that if you spend the money on the Canopus hardware interface that you won't get any software to accomplish what you want - and there is so much consumer oriented software for sale at your large computer shops that you should investigate what's there first. It typically comes with some kind of low-end hardware interface...

Are you thinking of editing any of this or just doing a straight VHS to DVD?

We have Sony Vegas (professional)... There is a home version - comes with DVD Architect software so you can actually build a playable DVD with a menu and such.

I'll have to shop around the stores here in Greece... I doubt they have half the stuff you are thinking about :)

I'll just be doing straight VHS to DVD. We have old home videos of when me and my sister were kids and DVDs are probably less likely to get ruined than a VHS sitting and not being used much...

I bought this to backup VHS to DVD.

However it doesn't come with software, so you would need to get that too (there are various ones)

Just be careful of cheap solutions.. a lot of times they look like total crap when you buy one of those $100 hardware/software packages.. like the dazzle

My ADVC 110 has done well by me.

Well, my father ran off and bought a pinnacle product... I haven't seen it yet but he sounds very impressed...
