do you have Service Pack 2? if not get the CD from microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx
if you do have service pack 2, uninstall it (start>control panel>add/ramove programs>(check) show updates>(find Service pack 2 and uninstall it)) then reinstall it
When did the problem start? Have you ever been to WU successfully? Do you have SP2?
yes i have SP2 installed, and it just started a few minutes ago, the update thing has been in my tray for about 2 days now and ive just been ignoring it, and when i restarted comp earleir it came up with the error  isnt anything serious but it is really annoying as quite a lot of the boxs come up
Can you go to the Windows Update site? There are a lot of troubleshoting hints there, if you can't get there. Maybe your computer deleted the update when you rebooted? You should be able to get it anyways from the website.
ok i havent got a windows update running or anything now, but the error is still being shown when i boot up... anyone any ideas what to do?
Go to Windows Update in IE, and download the required updates. That will prolly take care of it the next time you boot up.
I did but that didnt work either still comes up with the errors
Write down the error code, and look here:
http://www.updatexp.com/windows-update-errors.html
did you try uninstalling SP2 then re-installing it? the automatic update SP2 uses is different than SP1
nope i havent tried uninstalling sp2, here is the error message that comes up
the exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occured in the application at location 0x692db20b
do you have another computer? try copy'ing the "bad" file from that other computer to yours... this isnt somthing you generally want to do, but it may help.
its what i was thinking of doing
Did you run a virus check recently, as sometimes the wmiprvse.exe file gets infected.
scanned it but no virus
You could try running the system file checker and see if it fixes the client. You can do this by running the command sfs /scannow but you may need your XP CD handy. I think after XPSP2, it will get the files off the HDD, unless it was slipstreamed.
Were should I put the command?
In the command prompt or just in the run dialog.
none of them commands are recognised, ive tried replacing the file on my pc with the file from my laptop but still no luck, same message comes up even though it doesnt on my laptop, so maybe my computer restored it to the original file that was already on the PC?
OOps, my mistake, the correct command is sfc /scannow
Thanks for the help everybody, Ive ended up doing what ALL said, uninstalling SP2 and reinstalling, took a while but it got the job done :) thanks everyone
