Yes, your right, this is the wrong forum :D I do it that way too. Just make sure when you create the new image background
that its designated as Transparent. Then when you paste your image into it you only need to erase. :D
Edit: Its in the Contents frame. ;)

Create a new blank image of the same size,
copy-paste your image over.
Use the magic wand tool to select the white
Delete
Save for Web - Gif, with transparency

what i usually do is:
right-click on layer>Duplicate Layer...>(change name if desired)>(delete old layer [if desired])>select magic wond tool>set tolerance to 0>click on white spot>hit delete
