To connect remote computers, it is easiest to use a lan cable to access the router configuration. Copy the encryption key to the clipboard, and then open the wireless device properties. You'll be able to paste the key in (twice).
Then, you can click CONNECT, and it will connect automatically.
You can also copy the key to a diskette, and transport that to each machine, and paste it in when needed, as I have done that when the computer only had a USB wireless connection, and no lan card.
Then, make sure the workgroup name is the same for all devices, and you will be able to see them when you are connected.
I have a wired W2K Workstation connected to my router, and a wireless laptop. I have created an account for my laptop to access the Workstation, so when I type the IP address into the run box, I get a login prompt.
Once I logon, I can access shares, including the printer, which is shared.
Don't turn off encryption. It will work, but leaves you open to anybody that drives within 250' of the access point.
In addition to the WEP encryption dglienna was talking about newer products use WPA (Wi-FI Protected Access). This was introduced as it has been proven that WEP can be bypassed fairly easily. If your equipment supports it use WPA instead.
