Label

I get this error when I try to create a primary domain on my new server 2003 system.

It says that by not using multiple labels it will require extra configuration.
Can I just enter a single label or will that be too many problems later down the road?

i've never heard of people having problems with only having one label. although it may be possable.

if you use apache, you can supposidly setup subdomains in the .htaccess file. but you may not be using apache, and i have never actually done it.

I am running Server 2003. i am not too good at configuring a server but hopefully I can get it completed soon.

I need a .com name to make it a FQDN or can I make one up? :D

Well - I'm still only running Server 2000 - not yet upgraded to 2003 (tell me your horror stories - I know one - make sure MDAC is at 2.8 before the UPDATE!!!)...

At any rate, my server domain is antares.local - but everything goes by \\ANTARES

The computer name is SERVER01.antares.local (I didn't chose the silly name SERVER01 - the hardware guy did...)

When I go look at a 2003 box that the same guy setup (at one of my customer sites), that box is called SERVER03.iuoe.local. Again - everything goes by \\IUOE.

So go with vbguru.local (lowercase seems to be the normal setup - at least by this person!).

vbguru.local, where local will referr to the local host or something? Then when I get a .com name I can change it or it wont matter?

What if I get a domain name before doing this? Do I change .local to the domain name?

I'm guessing the .local is just a label chosen by the hardware guy who did my install - just as meaningless as the example MS put in the error message.

It has nothing to do with the internet domain - I had that way before my hardware guy chose the name for my network.

So .local is the same as .domain is the same as .LA :)

Oh, ok. I was thinking that it was supposed to be the .com name. :ehh:

I checked out my works servers and they are labeled as domain.dotcomname.com
So thats where I got it from. I havent seen the network admin yet so I havent been able to ask him.

If I mess up can I delete a domain?

Szlamany, just found out that the .local is generated by Windows. No need to enter it in or you will get a duplicate .local labels. ;)
