Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
Hey, i read about a program called Skype today. What is apparently does is that it enables you to make phone calls from you PC to any other PC or telephone in the world. I was wondering though... if this is possible, wud your internet bill be increased??
Thanks,

Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype??
I have used it since v0.2 beta...it is great....you get a really nice sound too. Sound like you are in the same room. But if the line of one of you are slow, then there will be a delay. but if not, then you can talk to an other person on the other side of the world in real time. I use it to keep in contact with all my friends.
If I am not wrong it is the same guys that made KaZaA or some other big app that has made it. It works like MSN or any other IM but it is for voice in stead of text. So if you have a DSL or Cable or something you don't have to charge anything to use it. Thats why I am using it. Because phone calls to an other country is very expencive.
But if you are on a dial up or something then you have to pay for every minute. So then it isn't much use for it. Except if you are all ready on the net though. But you still don't charge more. it is like if you have one or two browser windows open. you don't pay more for the second window.
The great news is that (I think it is Alcatel) is soon comming with a cell phone with Skype. That means that if you are in an area that was WLAN then you can call for free with your cell phone too..:;)...and Nokia is soon comming with cell phone too with Skype...but who with respect for them self buys a Nokia phone.
The bad thing is that you will probably not be able to buy a cell phone with skype with a subscription that makes the phone cheaper. So you will probably have to pay full prise, because they are gussing that the phone companies will lose a lot of money because of the new technology.
Hope that helps you on your way.

Do you need a microphone or something to talk through? I would be interested in something like this, now im on cable.
PS, does this require a subscription/hidden fee anywhere, and does it work in the UK?
Thanks NoteMe
Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
Yeah. You need a microphone, and speakers on you PC. And there is no fees. At least not on your PC. Not sure where the story will end on the cell phone though. But that is actualy a completly other storry.

Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
Do you need any additional hardware for this, better still what is the homepage?
Thanks
Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
Search 'skype' in google.
Ermm.. So you're sure that if i'm on cable, i won't have to pay any other fees on top of my current bill??

Why not just use Yahoo Instant Messenger? It has Voice chat, video conference, Instant Messaging, and email all rolled into one. It's all free. I have no idea what you need skype for when Yahoo does this already...

Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
No, its an Instant Messaging (IM) service just like MSN or AOL.

Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
Yeah, but im sure somebody told me before they have hidden service charges or something :ehh:
Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
I've had my yahoo account since 1999 (6 years!) and I've never been charged a dime. They do offer "upgraded" email accounts with more features (for $$), but I've never had the need to use it.
Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
MSN also had the same futures as Yahoo, but I normaly use Skype for my voice convos. It is not so bloated, and has better sound quality.

Do you not have to buy credit in order to use Skype for phone calls to non-skype users (ie. the average landlines) :S
Re: Anyone ever heard of Skype?? [RESOLVED]
That's what Sype Out is. I haven't used i, though. I don' talk to that many people I guess.

I am not sure, since the cell phones is not out yet. But I guess you have to pay for the service in some way. but the thing is that if you are calling to an other cell phone that has skype, and both are in a WLAN area, like two guys sitting on the diffrent side of the world at work, then you will be able to call for free. I love the idea, and I will buy a phone like that righ away when a 3G phone has it.

A cell phone can use skype? That is an interesting idea. You say 3G would be required? My phone has internet capabilities...

Yeah, as I have all ready said in this thread. Alcatel has started making one. When Nokia heard about it, they started to make one too.
And no 3G is not required. But I am not going to buy a new phone that isn't 3G now. Not sure how far you have come over there, but here in Norway buying a non 3G phone today is like buying candles in stead of a lamp.
And you say you have internet capabilities. What kind. Wap? If so, that doesn't have anything to do with it anyway. It is a 10 years old technology where the western world was overtaken by DoKoMo and Japan. Thats when we found out that we need 3G in the world...;)
