I always go to crucial.com and use their memory finder. You'll need to know the model of your computer or motherboard.

also sometimes it says on the ram chip itself. if all fails take it into a computer store and they generally can find out for ya.
Find out what your motherboard is and look in the manual for information like that. It will tell you which chips you need and what speeds it supports.
My guy at the computer store gave me memory that was too fast for a p4, and the surprisin thing was that it worked! I left, and got a phone call 3 hours later. The machine BSOD'd twice in a row, before not even beeping. Thinking the worst, I picked up the machine and brought it for repair, and found out that the memory was too fast. Go figure...
