trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
hi, i am having a little bit of a problem on my computer where somehow i got a trojan and it has installed a load of unwanted stuff like 2 tool bars. i would just reinstall windows xp but my dad used it on his pc and then it went missing. i can not find out how to get rid of the tool bars. one has a Remove Toolbar button which takes you to some search page. i dont know how these got past windows xp sp2's security features. here is a screen shot.http://www.vbforums.com/attachment.p...id=35791&stc=1
how can i remove these from my computer. alse the trojan has made it so only the screen saver and settings tabs are active on the display propertys. how can this be fixed aswell.
the trojan made the wallpaper look like the bsod but saying security warning and said that it was caused by trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c i dont know if this is true.
thanks, dandono
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
Search for TrendMicro.com, and run their online virus-checker.
It should help.
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
The toolbar you see is a Browser helper object (BHO). An oxymoron as; clearly in your case and most infact they are just an annoyance. You can disabe BHO's completely by going to the advanced tab in Internet Options and unchecking "Enable third party borwser Extensions".
You can also disable BHO's on a one by one basis if you have installed XP SP2, this article explains how:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...onmanager.mspx
A small program called BHOCop can also be used to do the same if you do not have SP2.
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
I also recommend you take a look at this post which lists some useful (all free) tools which can identify and remove this junk from your PC.
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
You may find it under add/remove programs :)
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
i uninstalled all the things that i dont know what they are (the toolbars and all). does any one know how i can remove a trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c virus. i have allready got rid of wp.exe and wp.exe and a few things that was copied into the windows dir but there is still something there. it keeps changing my home page and it wont let me change my background or anything. i keep getting this fake looking thing saying about spyware and it does not have any links to microsoft related sites and there is a message balloon which does the same.
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
Didn't you read my post #2?
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
I would recommend you install a full time antivirus anyway. :)

If you cant find it try Panda Activescan
www.pandasoftware.com
Have you run spybot or adaware? :)
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
it seems i had loads of the things on this one computer but every other computer was clean and because all my files are on another pc i thought that it would be much quicker to just reinstall windows xp. i meen why spend like 4 hours cleaning viruses from my pc when i can spend half an hour reinstalling xp and then i can get back to programming.
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
Your choice. At least when you remove them, you get to see what they're called, and that usually gives you a clue as to where they came from, which should help prevent you from getting them again.
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
well it normally happens when i have played around with my user profile files and replace it with new ones and i forget to set the pup-up settings in msie.
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
lol you were looking at porn :bigyello:
i had this a few days ago..your background image is an image stored in the
internet explorer folder..
It tells you your disconnected from the internet..right? just sometimes though..
i fixed it by deleting all the files it modified at that time and re-dl the .dlls from a
site :thumb:
Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
i was not looking at porn and there was not this thing saying i was dissconnected. my background changed to something that looks like the blue screen of death saying i have a trojan.

Re: trojan-spy.HTML.smitfraud.c
if you 'was not' looking at porn then why did you say about getting it from porn? i think you gave away something lol. i dont look at porn because i have better things to do.
