Reputation with no points...
Okay....
I have now learnt that you get no points if your post is rated by a person who has yet to reach the milestone of 20 posts.. ...
i want to ask.. is this rule worth it? How come you now encourage experts to answer newbies easiest questions?
It's just a thought...
Re: Reputation with no points...
I don't understand what you mean when you say "How come you now encourage experts to answer newbies easiest questions?".

When you have point system... everyone races for the points... and if one knows he is not gonna get any points for answering a new member's question... he'd definitely go for the questions asked by older members.. so to get some points... rather than WASTING their time in answering POINTLESS questions...
Hope you understand my point...
Re: Reputation with no points...
That's why my signature says "Rate any post you find helpful - even in old threads".
I rate my colleages posts all the time - if I see something that is well worded or something I find meaningful - I rate it. Even if I'm not involved in the thread at all.
I also have no issue with helping a "first time forum visitor"...
The ratings I get might make me feel good - but they are in no way the motivation for why I'm involved in the forum.

I am talking in general...
Re: Reputation with no points...
I may be wrong here but I think this is what they were thinking (vBulletin).
If you require the new members to aquire a minimum of 20 posts before they can rate someone then this will help
deter some members from trying to create duplicate accounts and rate their original account. Thusly (if thats a word),
trying to cheat the system.
I dont think anyone is going to go to the trouble of creating a dup account and make 20 posts just to Rate their
original account for 1 Rep point.
Besides if they were to be found that they had a dup account they could risk getting in trouble too. ;)

hmm... okay... this thinking is fair enough.. i agree.... but can they do it the way that the points get adjusted later, once the person that awarded the reputation crosses the 20 posts count... :)
or if they do it... post count may be set even higher..

That is an excelent suggestion! I think that would help solve both issues. :thumb:
Now to see if it can be done without a special hack.

I understand you now but I don't think many people operate that way. I know I don't.

Would you want points taken away from you if a person who had given you points got several negative reps hence lowering their power?
Re: Reputation with no points...
Martin, how about his suggestion in #7? Is it possible?
Re: Reputation with no points...
Me neither, the accummulation of points is a benefit of answering posts in the long run, not the goal.

Change of underlying code is usually avoided.

I thought I answered that in my post #10. What I was saying was that if you want to get points later after someone's reputation goes up, you'd have to accept getting points taken away if their reputation goes down. Also any adjust later scheme could result in wholesale point inflation if, say, we had given each other points and then my point went up which might result in your points going up which might result in my points going up, etc.

hmmm... that inflation thing... it's a programming logic issue... isn't it? ;)
Well... i had a point to make... and a suggestion to float... :) If it can be done... it's fine... and if it can't... i don't have any problems.. :) I do and will continue doing all the possible help of new members... :)
Re: Reputation with no points...
The rules state that no points are given while a member proves himself to be legitimate during his "probationary" period. Once he "passes" a flag is set, which gives him the power to give points. It shouldn't be difficult to check at that time for any ratings given, and convert the points from zero to 1 (or -1)
Right now, no major adjustment is done when someone loses rating power.
This doesn't have to change. When someones power goes up, all of the ratings that were given don't get adjusted, so why would they be deducted if he lost power?
Re: Reputation with no points...
Sorry but the current rules and logic aren't going to be changed.

I have been rated by a member with more than 200 posts but my rating didnt increase, how is that?
Re: Reputation with no points...
It's not just the number of posts that matter. The person who rates you must also have at least 5 reputation points. Everyone started with 5 but the person who rated you got a -1, leaving him with 4 so his rating of you didn't add to your reputation.

I agree with Mendhak; but, personally, I have always found the experienced members very willing to answer all of my "easy" questions. Really, it's not about the points, but helping someone else.
