Technology and it's Effects
I have heard about some very far-out things about what they are doing with technology. For example, I heard that Cisco was working on a system where your home can be rigged and you will be able to control almost any aspect of your house through the use of an online account. And then the telecommunications aspect has the possibility to tear apart families because of the social seclusion that would occur. What do you people think about this stuff?
Re: Technology and it's Effects
Automated houses already exist it's just new/soon to be released technologies will make it easier (and cheaper) to do.
New wireless standards will allow extremely large bandwidth transmissions over short distances, IPv6 allows enough IP addresses so every device can have a unique address. It's just a matter of time.
I don't agree it will cause social seclusion - the World is getting smaller by the minute - it should bring people together! I'd be more worried about the security aspect - I don't want my fridge hacked!

Re: Technology and it's Effects
Technology has been doing weird and wonderful and not so wonderful things for a long time ,especialy were sercurity is concerned ,its like anything realy how far are you going to let it control you ,will you turn on and off your lights when your away, turn up your heating just before you get home,it carnt be all bad,its here to stay ,but i think its how you use it to that matters.
Re: Technology and it's Effects
I've done that for the past few years, using X-10 equipment, which meant replacing outlets and switches. The keyfobs are nice. You can dim the lights from outside.
It will be easier when all the equipment has an IP address connected to a wireless network. Hope they get the wrinkles out of security of the devices. I'd hate for someone to be able to turn off the alarm on me.
