Check this file:
<windows_folder>\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
You'll probably have lines like this:
127.0.0.1 <some website you don't want to see>
If this list includes ones you're trying to access, remove them.
Don't forget to back it up first in case your computer explodes! :afrog:
Do other internet applications work ok?
Other App are working pretty good
this is what i saw
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
Now what is to remove...???
Looks fine to me, shouldn't need to delete anything, try doing a few windows updates, sometimes that has worked for me in the past.
Try opening internet explorer, goto Tools>Internet Options then click on the Connections tab, then click on LAN Settings, and if the use a proxy server is checked, try unchecking it and going to a site.
If all else fails, you can always reinstall windows over the previous one you had installed.
Do you have a firewall, or Anti-Virus software? Some of them can lock off the Internet on you. If not, create a new user profile, and log in as a new user.
You may have hosed your user account.
Don't worry, you can export from the old right into the new to get back all your data before you delete the old user. You don't have to be in a hurry to delete the old one, but you will have limited Internet Access.
Also try a ad-ware/spyware removal tool....
This is free for personal use: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Seems weird that it works in a explorer window because it just launches IE6 anyway..
I'd think some plugin (possibly, antivirus, firewall, spyware, ect... is screwing up something)...
IE = Devil.
Plain and simple, It sucks.
I know that doesnt really answer your question, and I aplogize. I've just found the best way to deal with IE is not to deal with it at all.
Firefox = Ownage.
I suggest downloading "Hijack" this from http://www.download.com/3000-8022-10227353.html and running the app. Then copy the log and paste it to this post. I will exmaine it (to the best of my ability) for you to try and see if you have a browser hijacker on you system.
Use Firefox, it's very similar to IE but more powerful and easier to use. Try it, it's free :thumb:
Wondering how long it would take the FF fanboys to start their advertising on this topic.
IE is just a shell for the internet framework in Windows. The fact that it works fine in Windows Explorer indicates that the core internet files in Windows are fine, try Microsoft's Anti-Spware solution if you like, it's my favourite, much better than Ad-aware IMO, it's still in beta, but it's very stable (Link).
Once you install it, check that nothing has tampered with IE, there are some settings that help you with things like that in the Advanced Settings.
Failing that, ensure no firewalls are blocking your path, disable the Windows Firewall if it is enabled and yeah, install any security updates from Windows Update.
