Bill Gates sure didn't make billions from BASIC. He made billions from selling the operating system that dominated the PC market share, and capitalized on that with other software.
Bjarne didn't even dominate the C++ field, but opened the language up for standardization, and general tinkering. Sun didn't do that with Java, MS didn't do that with....well, with anything.
how much BASIC contributed to OS..
?
It was a component, and not a very useful one, either.
then how he get involved in OS..
His dad worked for IBM when IBM was coming out with the first PC.
He sold DOS to IBM as their new operating system for the new PC. When the PC became THE big thing, DOS became THE big operating system. DOS lead to Windows, Windows lead to billions.
The only real competitor was Apple, and they never got above a 10% market share, and it has shrunk since then. Now there might be Linux, but then again, maybe not.
BG developed Basics or DOS...? ;)
DOS. Basic was around on big machines before PC's came into being.
It came installed on PROM in my HP-85, among other machines.
HP-Basic was very cool. I think it was later than the PC though.
Oh, yeah. Have a look at this:

I like this quote.
from http://searchvb.techtarget.com/sDefi...213805,00.htmlQuote:
BASIC was an early programming language that is still among the simplest and most popular of programming languages. Originally designed as an interactive mainframe timesharing language by John Kemeney and Thomas Kurtz in 1963, it became widely used on personal computers everywhere. On IBM's first "family" computer, the PCJr, a BASIC cartridge was a popular add-on. Because of its simplicity, BASIC has frequently been used in teaching the introductory concepts of programming with a working language.
It's more about marketting. Marketing is smarter than coding. ;)
i m going to B marketer ... :)
BG (as M$) bought DOS from somebody, and resold it to IBM. It IS all about marketing. He was in the right place with the right product at the right time. He didn't create the product, he just got the rights, and sold the idea.
it is true about DOS only...
but how he entered into Biz..
little detail will be appreciated..
