VB - Server Power!

Can anyone tell me or point me in the right direction - what is the best way to guestimate the sort of server you would need to cater for 100 users who are regularly querying a database (MySQL) using a VB interface? Also, what sort of a server would you need for a big website like say Google or Amazon?

Not sure about MySql, but M$ SQL Server is good for huge applications, as well as medium size ones. Access is only good for a handful or less of users.

Since your asking a hardware question and not a database question, it would depend on the load being placed
on the server by the vb app.

Basics would be a multi processor system (3-4 cpu's) with at least 4 Gigs of RAM (since most low end multi cpu
motherboards max out around there and depending on how much you want to spend). Add RAID 5 support for fast
redundant disk access, etc. Plan on spending big $$$'s.

That's a bit vague.

100 users is not a large amount - but the frequency of the hits they will have on the DB and the type of queries against the DB would be more meaningful.

Will they hold locks? Are they forward only type queries? Lots of inserts? What would lots mean to you? Lots of updates? What number means a lot to you?

And when talking numbers I mean count of activity in a one minute span of time, for example.
