I cant figure out why my speakers wont work, ive been using headphones for a while, and im sick of it...They turn on, and i plugged them in correct, they used to work on this computer before i moved. The headphones work perfect, they plug into the usb, the speakers plug into the colored wholes on the back of my dell...The speakers are Harmon/Kardon wine shaped, and came with the dell. Does anyone have any ideas to get these babies going?
Have you checked the mixer? You can also set the speaker type in control panel.
Run through Volume control and any other speaker properties to ensure that you have not checked a "Mute" option somewhere.
A litle while ago my speakers "stopped working" and it took me a while to discover I had accidentally tuned the external volume control down.

Check the connection on the speakers too. Sometimes after I mess around with the socket in the back a bit the sound is okay. It's very tempremental :sick:
i dont know how to check these things, all i know is that when i plug headphones in, they work so it isnt the card or any settings..and im positive i have it plugged in right
Click the speaker icon down the bottom and check the bars are up and mute isnt selected.
Find another device to actually test the speakers on to check it isnt them :)
That actually doesn't eliminate the sound card. You need headphones that plug into the speaker socket in the soundcard. Using a USB headset just proves that it can process digital sound data, not that it can convert digital signals to analog like it would when you plug speakers into the sound card.Quote:

humm, but they plugs do not match...i guess i will have to plug into another computer..
if they are powered speakers, you will be able to hear a 'clicking' sound when you touch the connector. if you hold your finger there, you will hear a hum.
Don't do it a full volume, but make sure that the volume is not off.
If you can hear any sound at all, then the speakers are fine.
Double-click on the speaker in the bottom right of the screen. It will open the mixer. Check Options -> Properties and check a) that your correct soundcard is selected and b) you see the controls for Playback.
Then, check that nothing is checked and the volume is up for each slider.
You can mute individual sliders, and you can also mute all. Most likely the speaker volume is turned down.
Do you hear sound from the soundcard with the speakers, or directly from the CD player?
