CPU Casing is Grounded HELP!
I bought my new unit just recently and it works fine for few days. Then something just happened, when I touched the casing of my computer it has a tingling effect similar to "grounded". I had a UPS though, I can't seem to justify what is the cause of it. Is it my electricity line or what. I didn't seem to know, or was it something else...
can you solicit your theories or facts of what's the cause of this situation?
Re: CPU Casing is Grounded HELP!
I used to have a PC that gave off a charge. I think that's one reason that most cases are plastic nowadays. Make sure that everything is grounded, including your modem/router/printer.

I always get electric shocks. It could in fact be you and your static :)
Re: CPU Casing is Grounded HELP!
Like Bodwad said it could be you that is the cause of the static. Try touching something else that is metal and grounded before touching your PC, see if that eliminates the problem :thumb:

no, when I was getting shocked, it was not a quick spark, it was voltage whenever I touched a metal part of the case. not enough to close the muscles (which is why you should always test for live wires with the back of your hand first) but a lot more than 12 volts. it seemd like ac current, but it wasn't 110v.

Personally I'd use a multimeter. :D

Just think of the money saved on hair-gel :D
Re: CPU Casing is Grounded HELP!
You could also use a cheap circuit tester (cheaper than a multimeter, but does the same thing in this case). I would be inclined to test for a current to the grounded part of an outlet....actually, for you brits, things may be a bit different.
I seem to remember that there was an actual wire on early PC's that grounded the case explicitly, simply because it was part of the ground for the system. I haven't seen such a thing lately. Your problem could be simply that the ground is not working right and your case is acting as a capacitor.
And that's about as much as I know about electricity. However, it is more than dglienna who is testing for live 110 wires with body parts
(my hand sure isn't what I'd use first, back OR front)
(I'd use my tongue)

my grandfather (an electrician by trade and a navy underwater electrician in his day) never used one. if a line was supposed to be dead, he wouldn't just assme that it was dead. he'd touch it with the back of his hand. it never affected him, except that he always said that he was 'magnetized' so that wris****ches never worked when he wore them. and no, i don't think he wore them when he did his test, although now, i wonder...

Looks like the damage passed down the family tree :afrog: :afrog: :afrog:

Chicks dig electric hair.
